Show WHAT IF MEANS GREAT THINGS FOR OGDEN CITY AND FOR THE STATE OF UTAH it will be remembered that early in september of last year general manager and general superintendent in fillmore were in ogden and the standard for the first time mentioned the proposed lake cut off in november mr fillmore was here again and he stated then positively that the lake cutoff cut off would be built there has since that time been no doubt in the minds of the ogden people that there would before many months be work going on on this greatest of all scenic lines and that by 1901 the trains would be running across the lake the saltiest inland sea in the world and yet there were some who doubted the facts of the surveys were published in march and then an announcement was made that on may lath there would be a meeting of the directors of the southern pacific at which tima there would be submitted to them a full and complete statement of the lake survey with the opinions of competent engineers on the feasibility of the route the was held and the work on the final details of the survey was continued orders were placed tor certain supplies and machinery supplies were being delivered at lucin the bear river bridge and switch were remitted refitted re fitted and repaired all getting in readiness lor the work and each detail has been noted adding to the confidence ot the ogden people that the line would be completed and now the construction company has been organized the work will begin in a few days and but few months will elapse until the road is completed and it means an expenditure of from to for the completion of the road the greater part of that will go into material but there will be a great call for labor of all kinds for there is no time in the history of railway construction where every class of labor is not necessary the bulk of the money expended tor supplies and labor will coma to ogden though there will be a large camp at bear river bridge where the supplies will be unloaded and shipped by scows down the bear river to the lake supply points the work hlll be continued along the line of the proposed track there will be thirty pile drivers and and there will also be some drills at work tor the bottom of the lake is so hard that it will be necessary to drill holes to start the piling the deeper parts of tha lake where the water reaches a depth ot 37 teet will be fitted with piling and then a great deal 0 rock will be dumped therein to save the piling from a larger part ot the lug of the water it all looks good for ogden and looks good also for the state too many enterprises of this kind cannot be started in any section and everybody will benefit by the work THE MAGNITUDE OF IT the work on this short line of the S P Is greater than could be fully set forth in one article it begins at ogden city and at the bridge over the odgen river the short line leaves the old route and cuts across toward the lake the lake is spanned by a trestle to the promontory to which the road clings for about two miles and then it shoots its two ribbons of steel across 19 miles of water the greatest inland sea in the world a most beautiful stretch of water placid and deep here will be erected a steel truss bridge upon piling driven into the water and sand the water sometimes 35 feet deep and the bridge to toe 19 miles long a marvel of engineering skill which runs to strongs knob from here to lucan where the new road connects with the old Is a distance of 61 miles in this cut from ogden to lu aln the S P has actually saved more than the measured distance between the two points by the old route the distance from ogden to lucan by the S P route today is miles the actual hauling distance between the two points after calculating distance lost by gradients is miles that Is the same energy time and expense are necessary to haul a ton of freight OP a passenger over the miles distance as would haul ithe same freight over miles of level track the actual distance from ogan to lucan by the cutoff cut off Is miles and the grades are at no time greater than four feet to the mile or almost level it Is therefore estimated that in energy time and expense the saving by the cutoff cut off will be miles the elevations of the present route are as follows in feet above sea level terrace kelton hill kelton station promontory hill corenne ogden compared with the proposed route the reduction in grades would be moat marked from lucan elevation feet the line would have an easy drop to the level of the lake feet and from the lake an imperceptible rise to ogden feet no grade to speak of feet in miles THE NEW PLEASURE RESORT the tribune closes with the completion of the cutoff cut off will be a great thing to this state it once cut off the time between here and san francisco several hours and do away with many helper freight engines and crews used to lift freight trains over the hills on the present road it will give to this state another scenic attraction that will be impossible to duplicate anywhere in tho world and it may also lead to other important moves there Is some good fresh water on the promontory and in time a sanitarium and salt bathing resort will be built there will outrival all other local resorts the standard in its last interview with superintendent fillmore published the information as stated by that gentleman that with the road across tha lake would come one of the grandest pleasure resorts in the world mr fillmore stated that it would equal anything of the kind ow the 8 P on the coast in connection therewith it may be good information to the public to state that the S P company are now picking up all the land which they can purchase on the promontory |
