Show ST LOUIS STRIKING STREET CAR st louis may S one of the greatest strikes in the history ot st louis was inaugurated today when of the employed emp loyes 0 the st louis transit company went out to compel the acceptance cep tance ot their demands made several daya ago the salient features of the mens demands which the company refused to grant are briefly as follows that all conductors gripman and all men employed in the sheds shall be compelled to be members of the union that the officers of the union together with the officers of the company shall have full power to adjust all differences that maye arise and that in the event of their falling to agree shall it mutually agreed to place the case before tareo arbitrators that any member suspended by the union shall be suspended by the company without pay until euch time aa the union requires his reinstatement that any man elected to an office in the union requiring his absence for not more than a year shall upon his retirement from such office have his old place with the company practically every car line in st louis is tied up except the suburban line the only one in the city not a part of the extensive st louis transit companas comp anys system but the latter was compelled to shut down as their men were pulled off the cars by strikers at de hodiamont Hod lamont and in the down town section of the city A number of cars were run out on the park avenue division of the lindell line this led to frequent blote john kohring a 16 year old boy in a crowd on park avenue was shot and seriously wounded by conductor geo mcclellan in charge of a car on the park avenue division mcclellan was arrested on each one of the lines converging in washington avenue cars were run out four cars got down town as far aa sixth street but only one went around the loop AH were attacked by a mob on washington at fourth and fifth streets that threw sticks and stones several windows were anken and the motormen and conductors were injured by missiles A riot call was turned in at 8 from the corner of broadway and washington and a wagon load of police turned out to keep order but their efforts were in vain at this point a motorman was hit over the head with a club that cut a gash in his scalp A brickbat struck him in the mouth lacerating his lip and his nose was mashed by a stone he ran into a saloon for protection one passenger a woman about twenty years of age was struck in the heal by a sharp stone that crashed through a window and was badly wounded finally the motorman returned and amid a shower of stones and mud succeeded in getting his car away from tha crowd an attempt was made at to take out a car on the olive street line it got as tar as compton abue here the crowd took the gripman and conductor off and ran the cars back 10 the sheds six united states postal cars were tied up today each makes seven trips daily and covers miles they bring the malls from all sections of the city forty sub stations receive the delivery postmaster baumhoff said 1 I sei se i no need for acting hastily but the malla will be delivered on or some one will hear tram samuel lee chairman of the executive board of the amalgamated association of street car employed Emp loyes pt america who is in charge of the pres ent strike said aba company refused to treat with us we have taken the only recourse we are ready at any time to receive advances looking toward an equitable settlement there are ninety five per cent of chejne n la the union and they are out the other five per cent are operating a few cars but they will soon join both the day and night forces 0 the police are on duty squads hav 3 been posted along the street car lanei wherever trouble is eared mayor heln this afternoon sent a letter to edward S whitaker president of the st louis transit company urging that the company meet its em aloyes halt way and arbitrate their difficulties in answer to a similar letter sent to the strikers headquarters the grievance committee said that any offer which it could consider must come from the company as it had offered to arbitrate and had been turned down by the transit companas comp anys officers general manager baumhoff of the transit company said at 2 we are operating twenty cars on the park avenue division this evening we hope to run a tew more cars on the main line of the dondell division to carry the people home on washington avenue between fourth and eighteenth streets the tracks 0 the landell division are lined with thousands of strikers and sympathizers who are confident of their power to stop the few cars running the police stand by apparently helpless and do not interfere several passengers and street car employed emp loyes have been seriously hurt by flying missiles harry A bryan a national organizer of the street railway union and president of the cleveland street car union arrived today tor the purpose of assisting chairman lee in his conduct of the strike 1 I see no
