Show THE ERDMANN CASE COUNTY ATTORNEY TAKES EXCEPTION TO SOME statements editor standard Your report of the erdmann case in last nights standard docs me and perhaps others an injustice besides containing a number of untrue statements it gives out an absolutely sol false impression there is no clash as to the legal authority between myself and the gonei find never ha been the most friendly and cordial rel allons exist officially I 1 have houi ing to do with the investigation now in progress and shall not mix up in any real or pretended controversy tho coroner requested my presence to aid in the investigation but I 1 have no authority over it nor is it my duty to attend it though usually I 1 do attend to aid and acquaint myself with the case in the event that the jury should decide that any arrests should be made when it would be my duty to prosecute the day before tho proceedings began in this case I 1 was informed that a person died under suspicious circumstances cum stances in ane hotel ogden I 1 informed the coroner and together without creating any excitement we visited the place of death and the undertaker der taker and made such inquiries as we could but we did not think the information obtained was sufficient to justify an investigation under such delicate circumstances and the matter was dropped drop pod in the meantime however the sheriff and chief of police and others had been investigating the matter independently and on the following day while I 1 was in attendance upon the berry case sheriff layne informed me that he had sufficient cause to demand an inquest and I 1 am now satisfied that too did I 1 referred him to the coroner and told him that I 1 would be over as soon as I 1 could unfortunately I 1 was detained with the berry case until the inquest was well under way and when I 1 arrived the coroner requested me to assist in the proceedings As I 1 was unfamiliar with the evidence I 1 suggested an adjournment and that in the meantime an autopsy be held and the coroner so ordered before the autopsy I 1 suggested to the operating physicians that the result of their deliberations be kept absolutely absolu iely secret until called upon to give the same in a proper manner I 1 had no authority over them and claimed none and there has been no clashing of authority tho rity it I 1 had given or pretended to give the order indicated there would then have been a clashing of authority tho rity GEORGE HALVERSON |
