The swift waters of Jordan river claimed another an-other victim ycBterday afternoon "When little Frank Homy Pitts, aged 9. son of Patrolman Charles W. Pitts, 756 Qlendalo avenuo, waded Into tho river and was drawn in by the treaoh-orous treaoh-orous current. In company with another an-other boy he went swimming at a point just north of the Seventh South street bridge and vas sucked away hy tho current, the body bejjif? found '- .. , i ii4biit,i'""-'l' fn near the Fifth South street bridge about four hours later The unfortunate boy. ,in company with four others of about his own age, was wandering along tho river bank whon he was filled with the desire to go swimming which few healthy normal boy3 can resist Shortly Short-ly after 1 o'clock he and Parley Nelson Nel-son went swimming in a shallow placo just north, of tho bridge. Two other boys, Ray Sevier and Leslie Daupix, wero on the bank, evidently afrnid of the cold water The two boya in the water were near to each other when Frank was caught by tho current and swept from his feet He made a frantic grab at his companion and caught him about tho neck, but bis hands wore cold and ho did not hold on. although his little partner did his best help him out, according ac-cording to the two boys on the bank. They say that Parley grabbed hold of Frank's hands and tried to drag him out of the current, and was almost drawn In himself. He had firm footing, foot-ing, however, and the current tore Frank from him. The boys on ' bank ruBhed to the Pitts homo and a moment later Richard Rich-ard L, Shannon and Herman Bauer, Jtb SiiT?ii'gTMf' ii "'''"' -'-r-' -a ' who llvo near, were rushing to the river, followed by Mrs. Pitt, the boys mother, and Mrs. Herman Bouer. Others saw the trouble and in a few minutes there were hundreds of men, women and children lined along ' either bank while about twonty men and boys waded up and down In the icy water in an effort to recover tho body. The police were notified and thev In turn notified Patrolman Charles Pitts, who was on duty at the Oregon Short Line depot. A squad of officers' offi-cers' went to the scene in the auto patrol and remained until the body was found. A wire netting wa's stretched across the river by the policemen at the Fifth South street bridge and then the men dragged the river until 5:15 o'clock In the evening even-ing when thev found the body a few feet above the wire netting. It was turned over to the undertaking firm of E. G. O'Donnell & Co., from where funeral announcement will bo made later. Frank Henry Pitts wrn born April 20. 1903. and lived all of his short life In Salt Lake City. Ho Is survived sur-vived by his pnrents, five sisters and one brother. HIn sisters and brothers are Xyda, Mabel. Lcola, Gladys and Charlotte Pitts. |
