Show HIGH SCHOOL'S LATEST. The students in physiology and h3rgiene at the High school have gone beyond the school room to apply their learning and have found that there are slaughter houses in this city where- sanitation is disregarded, dis-regarded, and they have taken a further step afield io reojaeet th , city commissioners to investigate the unhealthful conditions and B apply a remedy. f Well done, High School 1 Whoever suggested this move has done much for education and has started a movement which promises prom-ises to invite other high schools to follow the example, and out of this beginning may come a civic pride that, emanating from the schools of the county, can do much to correct many of the evils from which the public in every city now suffers. Young people are without guile, and they are devoid of that compromising weakness known in politics and business as policy. They are outspoken, inquisitive and mentally active. Get them once started in the work of picking flaws in public affairs and they 1 will give the weak-kneed officeholders a period of nervous pros-. pros-. 1 tration. - i 1 1 Furthermore, the students will awaken to the fact that they arc j an active agency in the world's affairs; their powers of observation 1 I will be quickened, and their interest in everj'-day happenings will II be increased and their education broadened into a practical appli- i n cation of their book learning. Sir Francis Vale, writing for one of the educational journals, j H fiays. i "To interest young people at the gates of science you must take 1 1 them into the fields and show them the use of things, the value of I I proportion, sums, decimals, the stars, civic virtues and topography. Strike the note of adventure and you will get every boy worth 1 j haying in the world and every girl also. Make virtue, education, j unity and the'rest, dull, and you are pulling against the natural I forces of childhood and they arc the lords of the future." 1 And that is true. Have the children realize that the lessons 1 they are being taught have a practical side and give them an oppor- 1 I t unity to obtain tangible results and the acquiring of an education 1 I immediately is made a pleasure instead of an irksome duty. |
