In 1089 the General court of 'Massachusetts took the first step toward the establishment of a covernroent postal system. In Virginia Vir-ginia each planter was required to convey the disputcbes, as they arrived, ar-rived, to the next plantation, and so on. In 1072 the government of New York established a monthly mall to Vioston, and this practice was followed fol-lowed In other colonies. Benjamin Franklin was Identified with the early Inierests of the colonial post office. In 1737 he was appointed postmaster of Philadelphia. In 1735 the delivery de-livery of letters by penny post was begun. In 1755 the colonies combined i to establish their own post oitice and 1 to pay the necessary officials. The Continental congress appointed a committee com-mittee to devise a postal system, which went Into effect July 28, 1775. Benjamin Ben-jamin Franklin was unanimously appointed ap-pointed postmaster general. |
