Show JAILED FOR RIDING ON A PASS This forenoon A. E. Olsen wns arraigned ar-raigned before United States Commissioner Commis-sioner S. T. Corn on the charge of violating the interstate commerce law i and held In bonds of $200 for tho ac-; ac-; tion of the federal grand Jury. j Olsen was placed In tho county Jail yesterday afternoon by Special Officer Offi-cer II. H. Cordon of the Oregon Short Line, his arrost having been made at Bancroft, Ida. Tho officer stated that ho arrested Olsen for using a pass over the Southern Pacific railroad and also over the Oregon Short Line a short time ago, contrary to the Interstate Inter-state commerce regulations. This morning at the county jail Olsen Ol-sen said to a Standard representative that he w-as formerly omployed by the Southern Pacific company at Cobro, Nov , as a telegraph operator. Ho severed his connection with the company com-pany and concludedto make his way to Idaho, where heexpected n position posi-tion with the Oregon Short Lino. Ho had an old pass over tho Southern Pacific Pa-cific and he fully expected to ride on it to Ogden, but his friend who took his placo as operator at Cobrc told him thnt the company would Burcly take tip tho old pass and that ho would have to pay fare, suggesting that he had bettor write a now "message "mes-sage pass" and ride on it. Olsen said that ho accepted tho suggestion of his friends and wroto the new pass, a thing frequently done by employes of the road. This", however, how-ever, proved his undoing, for he had no sooner reached Bancroft than he was arrested. Olsen declares that ho did not think he was doing anything out of tho usual us-ual order of railroad custom and had no intention of disregarding the interstate in-terstate commerco regulations. Tho mistake ho made was in writing the new "message pass" after he had received re-ceived his time check from the company. com-pany. Had It been written prior thereto there-to there would have been nothing done In the matter Mr. Olsen camo from tho east a few years ago and has been employed by the railroad companies ns telegraph operator since then. Ho states that he has never been in trouble of this nature beforo and he thinks that when the facts aro fully understood that ho will have no difficulty In getting released re-leased from tho charges against him. |
