Show TREMENDOUS SEA STRILS A SHIP New York, Nov. 2S. A tremendous sea, which hampered tho bow and swept the decks of the Fabre lino steamship Santa Ana, caused tho death of four seamen and the serious injur to three others The news ot the disaster was brought to port when the liner arriveJ today from Marseilles and Naples. The ship's passage v. as stormy and unpleasant, but it was not until November 2H that tho heaviest sea was encountered Described by Captain Pcavcy as the "most terrific he ever encountered," a great mass of water rose like a wall before the vessel, then fell with crushing force on the decks, and sweeping over every part of tho ship, carried Seamen Durand, Sarti, Calisll and Quarelll overboard like corks. Three others wero stretched out unconscious un-conscious on the decks. The impact of the wall of water had nearly stopped the ship. Engines were reversed quickly Life buoys were thrown out promptly and. as the es-8ol es-8ol neared the spot where the four had been swept into the sea thoy were sepn floating on the buoys The sea was so violent, however, that three of them soon relinquished their hold and sank. Quarelli succeeded in grasping a life-line aud was hauled aboard. When attention waB directed to the injured it was found that two seamen Folact and Roumien and Pazettl, the ships' boy, had been badly bad-ly hurt Folact's skull was broken and ho died two days later. The other oth-er two were operated on and will recover. |
