Show Velvet Hoods for Winter. THREE sorts of black velvet hood are engaging the attention of those 1 girls who can grasp an idea quickly l and put it Into effect with the aid of a j needle and some sewing silk. The hood H most in demand as a portion of the skat- M Ing costume is a saucy little affair which H fits closely about the head, but does not H entirely conceal the brow. It is really a H Russian turban with a- sharply peaked 1 crown, and to make It one should first V o aU fit about the head from forehead H to nape of neck and about the cars a H broad band of stiff silk. Onto the upper H edge of this silk foundation gathered a H straight half yard wide length of black Kj velvet with bias cut ends, which wheu Hf joined form the peak of the hood, which H later is crushed down about the crown H and given the effect of careless draping. B Having arranged the crown to satisfac; H tion, place over the foundation band a H trimming of black, .silver or gold cm- H brpidered net, made intwo narrow strips H divided with tinsel braid, and if the H crown seems to nuff too much over the H border trimming press . backward the H fronts half way to tho peak by a row H of .five perpendicular embroidered net H strips, decreasing gradually in length H from the centre application. This gives H a sort otuiur.t effect, which is fascinnt- H ing and greatly becomes a ipund featured, Hj youthful face The cape portion of thin H hood is-nsoro properly a scarf, made of H u yard long strip of piece velvet, doubled H over and attached by its upper edge, H under ;t tinsel medallion, to the lower H back edge of the headgear. The two H cuds are then dr.iwn ifljout the throat H in 'wide .side plaits, and 'while one of H these tcctions (the under) 1$ untiimmcd H the overlapping cud is decorated "with H embroidered net bands in the s.ime man- H ncr as is the front of the hood. Of course H unlimited latitude i allowed in the triui- Hl iuing of this hood, both as to design and Hl colors, but tho flat, barbaric effects are H smartest. H A second hood also has the draped H crown effect, but in thin instance the half H yard length of velvet is not blanted off H at both ends but left 2tiiight, and the H two sliort sides as well as two of the H folded over edges are sewed togctlicr. This H makes an almost square bag two-thirds H of whose mouth is shirred on a velvet H covered half hoop reaching from car lobe H to car lobe, while Die remaining portion H is loosely gathered into a band crossing H the nape of the neck. For four inches H backward from the hooped brim the H ciown h elaborately trimmed with a H coarso mcsblikc banding of tinsel cord- H age or filk chenilk, embroidered witli H beaded disks or punctuated here and H there with metallic cabochous. TJio cape H of this hood starts at the nape of the H neck and consibts of a two yard long H lrip of velvet of the same width as the H narrow band which holds In tho fulness H at the back of the head. This strip of H material is perfectly plain until it H reaches the side of the neck, where be- H gins a decorative schema matching that H on the fiont of the hood, and this con- H tiuue.4 as far as the opposite side of the H throat, where the remainder of the vel- H .vet strip again becomes plain .save at Uie H lest remo' end, -where tho material is gatb- Hj Icrcd or-knotted. H The third velvet hood model is easiest of all to copy, since it cousists simply of a strip of velvet nine mchos wide and scarcely a half yard long, or, at all events, long enough to cover the crown of tho bead from car lobe to ear lobe. The only scam is nt the back, where the two folded over bides are joined, after which the edges of the velvet arc blind stitched onto a white satin lining nsaiut which is tacked a frilling of finely plaited wliito net, which outlines tho brow and below the cars turns rather sharply and slants away Into nothingness at the nape of the neck. This model is a charming type of tho Dutch hood, and it would be too plain but for the two big roses and their foliago of crocheted coarse white wool set against its left side, one of the flowers directly over the ear and the second and larger of the two near the top and close to the rear seam. TIip charm of these hoods is that they enn be used for so many purposes during the winter. Dchiguctl originally for use with black velvet skating costumes, thcy aro equally good for any other country fcport as wcM as for motoring, ami they nro not oiitof place during a winter voyage by water. .
