H A. J. Brown, the editor of Ihc Herald-Republican, has led in H the crusade against" the Salt Lake stockacje and has rejoiced oyer H the heavy sentence inflicted on Belle London; he has been the in- H spiring mind back of the purification league in Sat Lakcj he has H been demanding that the women rise up and crush Mayor Brans- H ford for tolerating the iniquities of a" restricted district; and now M Brown himself is face to face y-ith the heinous charge pf forcing a M woman p submit to indecencies or 'suffer djsmissa from Jier place H of employment. B Tle woman, it is true, was 41 years pld and capable of dis- H cerning right from wrong and seeing the pitfalls ahead, she was of H mature, judgment and must have known, thq consequences of her missteps. A woman who yields for a money consideration, or a H position, which is one and the same thing, must be devoid of that H i'inpr sensibility which is supposed to prompt impressionable, affec- H tionate young gjrls to' recoil from their fqlly and seek rolief in death H when, suddenly cpnscienpe-stricken; the-y see Jiein error in al its H hideousness. It was just possible that Marjorie Paine, in moments H of mental obsession, held fancied grievances whjch grew to the H horrible proportions of a reality j that what she most dreaded coi- H fronted her in her wild flights' as an actuality. That, we say, was, H possible, if the -woman was a nervous wrepk, made so by the over- H strajn of mental work, but is improbable? Let, us bp charitable m enough to defer reaching a conclusion until all the facts arc prc- M sented. |
