All but four of tho J. P. O'Neill i company's working force on the South j Forlt reservoir 'Bile came down from the camp lqst evening, Foreman Louis Phillips reporting to Manager O'Neill that bedrock had been uncovered across tho dam site and that thcro was nothing more to bo done. In stripping bedrock at Cobble creek, where the dam site Is situated, situat-ed, the construction company hag excavated ex-cavated a trench eighteen feet wide and about S00 feet in length, -150 feet in the bottom of tho canyon and about 350 feet north to tho mountain side connecting with the "Smith Cliff." In getting to bedrock under tho river channel, it was necessary to flume the river over the trench. This has caused much trouble and expense because of the impossibility to make tho Hume absolutely water tight. Thp seepage from above the flume into the trench aljso caused Inconvenience and delRy in tho work.Jiut the company com-pany remained steadily at work on tho project since the early part of September with a force of from twenty twen-ty to thirty men and a number of teams, Tho early part of the work, before the river channel proper was encountered, encoun-tered, and before tho trench became too deep for the use of teams, was done by teams and scrapers, but af-' af-' ter that the large derricks had to be brought Into play 'and the dirt -anf" ' other material hoisted to a safe dis tance from the diggings. Cold weath cr did not check the operations, ex cept that the progress was less rapid after wnter set in. Th.e project was inaugurated by ex-Mayor ex-Mayor Wm. Glasmann and tho city council by taking an option on lands owned by M. S Browning, A. L. Brewer Brew-er and others, which will be needed in the building of the reservoir, and proceeding to strip the bedrock at tho Cobble creek site. The first appropriation ap-propriation was $3,600 and the J. P. O'Neill company was given the contract con-tract for the removal of the earth from the bedrock. Tho city agreed to hear the expense of stripping the bedrock, but they offered the farmers of the county an option to join the city in tho" enterprise when it should be demonstrated that continuous bedrock bed-rock existed at tho dam site. Tho work of stripping the foundation stono was begun Immediately and Mayor Glasmann was appointed chairman of a committee to form a company and use Its power to Interest the canal ca-nal companies and all tho farmers of the county. Mr. Glasmann resigned resign-ed from said committee on account of being mayor of Ogden city and M. S. Browning succeeded him. This was successfully done, tho result re-sult being that $300,000 of stock was subscribed with the understanding that a company be incorporated as soon as bedrock could be shown. The cost to the clU has been about $20,-000 $20,-000 and, according to tho agreement, the city will bo reimbursed for tho expenditure in water rights in tho company to tho amount of twice the sum of money spent in doing the preliminary pre-liminary work The bedrock now being exposed, the next thing to bo done will be the forming of the company and tho filing of articles of incorporation. M. S. Browning is chairman of tho committee com-mittee and ho stntos that as soon as it is officially announced that bedrock bed-rock has been uncovered, the committee com-mittee will get busy in forming the .South Fork Reservoir company. Tho building of tho reservoir will holp double the population of Ogden and surrounding country. |
