Show 'WAGE WAR ON THE POOLROOMS In an cfrort to discourage the practice prac-tice of boys under the ago of 18 year3 loitering about the poolrooms of the city and also to prevent tho salo of tobacco to boys and young men who arc under the age of 21 years, Special Officer William Reast, acting under instructions from Chief of Police T. E. Browning, is waging a campaign against the proprietors of poolrooms and cigar stores. Several arrests have been made during tho past ten days and In all cases which have come before Judge J, D. Murphy the proprietors have been fined $G0 anil costs. Thero are two more cases pending. In four of tho flvo instances where proprietors have been arrested the offenders have been Japanese. Officer Reast docs not wish to take an unfair advantage of the poolroom inon and for this reason he desires to give them warning in order that they may acquaint themselves with the provisions of the city ordinances. This ordinance provides that boys under tho age of IS years mu6t not be allowed to enter cigar stores or poolrooms and that under tho age of 2i years they must not enter saloons. Thore is also a penalty for the sale of tobacco to boys under the ago of 21 years. A majority of tho poolroom and cigar store proprietors of the city are making an earnest effort to comply com-ply with the ordinances but tho officer offi-cer finds his greatest field tor activity among tho Japs, the boys realizing that many of tho foreigners do not understand the meaning of tho law. |
