Show H' THE NEWS IN A NEW LIGHT. H -r ' 1" a lengthy editorial, the Dcseret News defends its, position Hi of dictating to Ogdcn how this dity shall deport itself. Preferring 'to ''the fighting editor of the Ogden Standard" and "the irascible H geryus of the Ogden, Standard," the NeVs sa's: H ' A correspondent of the News wrote from Ogden on the I social evil and appealed to the Salt Lake press for aid H - in the fight against it. ' i ' : To this appeal we replied, in substance, that the cru- ' '," sq against the evil complained of ought to be carried on H ,k . by the good, citizens of Ogden; we expressed the opinion ' ". , that if they would come together'and agree on a plan they ' would have the support of the looal'prcss and we had par- H ' ticularly The Standard in view as well as the decent Salt H j Lake papers. . We added: . "It is a mattor for local iuiti- i 'The Tews editor is a modest, shy chap. To hear him tell it, H he would shrink from using an angleworm on a fish hopk. Tlis H nature is so refined, he could not harbor a thought of doing wrong to Hl anybody or anything, and yet there aremes when the News, with H i :rafty cunning, strikes viciously ujifair blows. Hj) f-ne News, in the article complained of, included an anonymous H! jommunication reflecting on the chy government of Ogdcn. All Mr! ; papers of worth nowadays either stand responsible for, or adopt as H their own, the utterances of correspondents who hide behind a nom H ' de plume; they do that, or reject the communication as unfit for K oublication. The man who, from a concealed position, throws a brickbat at any adversary, is either ashamed of his act or too cowardly lo openly make an attack. So, in the .case of, the News, we decided that the anonymous communication, containing the broad insinuation that the city government of Ogdcn was stupidly or designedly failing to perform its duly in earing for the social evil, was put forth as the utterance of the News, and we held that paper responsible. If mistaken, we bow acknowledgment, regretting though that the News has no ethics governing anonymous letters, but stands ready to be a medium of anonymous attack. ;The ,Ncw.s says that much of what wo, charged against it is un-IrucT un-IrucT Please be more specific. This paper said there is prize fighting fight-ing and bull fighting in Salt Lake county and harlotry in all that bailiwick, and that the- News in its sport columns has abetted the prize fights and bull fights; furthermore, that the News has an Augean stable to clean and, the task, if Avell done, will keep the editor and his assistants deep in the muck with rake and shovel, without time for muckraking in Ogden or elsewhere. Now, in what particular has the Standard, in making those observations, deviated from the truth? Is not every word a burning accusation carrying the conviction of truth? |
