Group action can serve better than individual effort. The Service club idea has sprung up in the United States and Canada to such universal extent that these organizations are taken as matters of course in the fulfilment of civic undertakings. Ro-tary, Lions, Kiwanis, Exchange, Optimist, Round Table and similar clubs constitute assets for group action in the life of the modern community. These "service clubs," as they are called, when properly conducted are more than mere "luncheon" clubs. They actually go after things worth-while for the community. They help to create community spirit. They in getting together which is a good thing in itself. They are frater-nities without the "frat"; lodges without the ceremony. Some there are who feel that these organizations are taking unto themselves the problems of public welfare, but justification for such 'criticism is not bourne out by the facts. . The central idea behind the service club is often uiiwed even by many of its own members. These organizations primarily have not the technique to carry out movements themselves. The ideas they gather at the club are to be put into action in other channels. For example, if the idea of fair dealing is instilled through the medium of the club, the act of fair dealing is carried out in business. Child welfare, playgrounds, underprivileged children, education and be- - ncvolences are some of the many objectives Of the service clubs. They have also raised the ethical standards of business in no small degree. They work i hand in hand with chambers of commerce and other civic organizations. The service club principles have permeated the business and social world in a manner well worthy of their endorsement.
