Show Engineer Runs His Train Through a Wall of Fire Los Angeles, May 1. Had passenger passen-ger No. 10S of 'the San Joaquin Valley line of the Southern Pacific been delayed de-layed a few minutes on its journey to" Los Angeles last night, it would have plunged with its 200 passengers into the wreck of a burning bridge near Ravenna, 50 miles north of hero. The train, which was mnde up in Fresno, Included thrco dav and four Pullman coaches. Traveling at a rapid rate, a little after 6 o'clock it rounded a sharp curve, and tho en-g'iioer en-g'iioer saw Just ahead of him the burning bridge. Unable to stop in time, ho opened wide tho throttle nnd rushed the heavy train with Its human freight through tho roaring flames to safety on the other side. A few minutes min-utes afterwards tho south end of the brldgo fell. The train stopped, and its crew, aided by many passengers, went back to fight the flames and succeeded succeed-ed finally in extinguishing them. Tho fire Is thought to have been causod by tramps. |
