Show EXPECT DEADLOCK ON SENATQRSHiP SACRAMENTO, Jan. 1 The legls-lature, legls-lature, which convenes tomorrow, will elect a successor to United States Senator Frank Flint, and whilo predictions pre-dictions of a deadlock are fieely made, the supporters ot Judge John D. Works, of Log Angeles, tonight claim that he has fourteen votes more than necessary to elect over A. G. Spalding his opponent. Judse Woiks was the candidate of tho progressives at the recent state primaries, and Mr. Spalding, the San Diego millionaire, was put forth by the regulars. Works carried tho popular vole, but Spalding Spald-ing carried a majority of the districts and Is making his rlight on tho ground that a majority of tho legislators elected elect-ed iu November were pledged to him. The situation Is further complicated by the fact that many of these districts dis-tricts returned Democrats, and also thnt the twenty hold-over senators do not regard themselves as bound by the primaries. Tho primary law i elating to an ad-lsory ad-lsory vote for United Suites senator is somewhat vague and in the event of u deadlock, there is strong proba blllty that it will be disregarded and nn outsider elected as a compromise. |
