Show uu MUSIC AT THE DEESCH00L What proved to be one of the most Interesting events of tho year in tho educational world was tho musical demonstration given by the students of the Dec school Monday afternoon, under the direction of Miss Hunter, supervisor of music, and Mr. Barker, principal of Iho school. All tho principals prin-cipals and supervisors of tho Ogden City schools and several members of the board of education were In attendance. attend-ance. Starting with tho first grade and following the othors through consecutively, consecu-tively, tho process of tho present musical mu-sical system was shown to bo a groat siiccess and systematically thorough In every detail. Miss Hunter deserves special praise for her sympathetic understanding un-derstanding of tho chMd mind and its needs for a musical education In tho first and second grades tho work was largely simple rote singing at little songs containing big eusy rythms songs calculated to develop the senso of sentiment and rythni so essential as building materlnl for later work. There was, however, oven In theso grades somo attempt at tho first principles prin-ciples of notation. It wns really fascinating fas-cinating to hear thoso llfty little tots mere babies C and 7 years old Blng-ing Blng-ing in perfect unison their simple melodies. With the third grade commenced com-menced the interpretive work and sight siuglng by phrases, and In the fourth grade two-part singing. Avlth more emphasis on finer interpretation and the technicalities of jiotntlon. In the fifth grade some individual work was Introduced and admirably handled han-dled by Miss Ballard, teacher of that grade A duet by two of tho llttlo girls should bo specially mentioned. Miss Merl Thurman and Leon Johnson, John-son, singing nlto and soprano, carried off the honors of the day Tho sixth and seventh grades showed good form, singing Uo and throc-pnrt songs in different kes with real Interpretive understanding. As chorus work, it would bo difficult to find In anyschool more gorous, tender ten-der voice work. The fact that In all tho songs the students sang without the teacher singing with them was particularly praiboworthy for tho system. After the regular program was over all tho students formed in squads in the central hall and sang "America." The order of their marching and apparent ap-parent good will and behavior speaks well for the efforts of Mr. Darker as a principal. Friends and parents of tho school should make an effort to visit the school and seo Just what kind of work is being done, not only in music, but In other subjects as well. Other than tho music feast all the principals, teachers, supervisors and members of the board enjoyed a light banquet served 'in simple elegance, and nfterwatds tbe most robust wont out on the grounds and played volley ball, tho late popular diversion and exercise Introduced by Mr. Underwood Under-wood in the city schools. The next ovent ot importanco is tho contemplated holiday at Lagoon on the 13th of May. All the teachers of all the schools, including the high school, with the principals, supervisors, super-visors, superintendent and members of tho board of education will "lot loose" for the afternoon in real games, picnic and a good time. -- |
