That question was decided in a doughnut-frying contest in Bangor, Maine, between Gov. Lewis Barrows of Maine, right, and Secretary of State Harry Jackson of New Hampshire. Barrows' claim that Hanson Gregory, a deceased Maine sea captain, invented the hole in the doughnut was upheld when he was declared winner of the contest.
