Show GROUNDHOG SPIRIT The old superstition has it that the groundhog, more commonly called the woodchuck, comes out of his hole on February 2. If the sun shines brightly, he concludes that this spring like appearance is only temporary, and he goes back to his snug nest for six weeks more sleep. If there is no sunshine, he concludes con-cludes that winter is broken, and he stays out and begins his spring activities. At February 2 over most of the United States the dead winter is still on the land. If the groundhog thinks there is any chance that spring is about to begin, be-gin, his observation of weather is faulty. In coming out so early, he shows a better spirit than many human beings do here abouts. They do not wake up. to new conditions until after these things happen. They are constantly doing things too late. The world needs more people, who like the groundhog, wake up several weeks in advance of events, instead of several weeks behind. |
