0 opportunity POrt unity for the study of pue geo geology 1 agy ogy than the region extending from cedar city southward to the bottom of the grand canyon of the colorado and tb abe e iq i no other locality of the same dimensions which contains a greater variety of minerals of economic value than does iron county yet both loth of those fields hae bae been almost wholly neglected until the past few years aside from the great bodies of iron ore in the iron mountain district and extending extend ng westward into the dull bull valley district w wd have in this county and extending into kane kano county a great body of of bituminous coal covering six hundred square miles of ground this vein of coal outcrops near the top of the cedar courtain mow mour tain just east of cedar city appears again in several alwa in coal creek canyon and ii is wn in many cast east as jar far ai as Ord ervill it 1 is approximately five feet thick on an average no doubt tt tl same vein extends westward from the fault plane juit just cast of cedar city but ii Is buried too deep for one to determine the thickness or extent while this coal has supplied iron county and to a limited entert washington Wai hington county with coal from the working g of four or five mines in coal creek canyon and the mountain since the first settlement of utah yel yet there has been no extensive c v the vein to the present time in the souta louta end of ox this county in the vicinity of new harmony there are three distinct veins of coal extending into wl washington agton county from iron county at th this 1 place the peat great intrusions of andesite forming the pine valley mou and the mountains nort northward bward have converted the bitu bituminous vinous coal into in n anthracite eastward extend irom from iron county into kane county there is a rosr of cannel coal six sit I 1 feet thick this coa coal Is ly rare and used chiefly for the mai ing of briccetti bric kelt ketti burning in open oyen grates and producing gas no dt db work hai ha i been done on this coal and at presort it is too far from a rail ral road to be of tom commercial mercial value beneath the cos I 1 a few hundred feet and outcropping jn the face of cedar mountain is a gnat body of the best afify of gypsum the stratum of as this mineral minera seems to be coextensive with the coal in iii coal creek canyon and within two miles of cedar city the gypsum Is completely exposed in many place all of the overbearing rock rock having been completely away this deposit will not remain neglected much longer in the mountains
