Show PI alt GREAT EAT INSTITUTE I 1 1611 IT ap TRE TO HELP PA FARMERS next month the extension division of tho the utah agricultural college will a assha s I 1 i t carbon and emery counties by g giving 1 v g us another farmers round up aad and housekeepers confert nee it will be held in stint for the counties from the to of november inclusive also one night session will be held beld in price monday evening nov 13 and two day sessions in wellington on nov 14 this is a very great privilege that the utah agricultural colle collego gf is giving us in addition to the ganv others which have been granted us since the establishment of the county a agent gent work here the following are a few of the speakers who will be in attendance dr john diederick Fie derick miss gertrude NIc mccheyne Cheyne dr hill dr harris prof louis windsor geo austin miss goldie faux prof geo came caine ben R eldridge dr geo thomas carl R marcusen dr R E cloward dr H B goetzmann the housewives tho farmers far mera the business men the high school students and all should take advantage of this great school everybody boost for better agriculture and better farm homes I 1 expect to have the program fully arranged for next weeks papers I 1 noto that visiting around through carbon and emery counties that not many farmers are doing fall plowing this is a ery very good fall for plowing as the long rain storms have dampened e n ed the soil up sufficiently well to make ploughing sloughing hing good if you do not sow your seed this fall leave the land as ploughed that is do not har row or float it but leave it open so the winter moisture will collect in inn the soil and not run off also the frost is better assisted in its action and the soil is better many farmers a have asked me relative to the price of poti potatoes toes basing my advice on the daily quotations that I 1 receive I 1 would suggest that the farmers be not in too great a hurry to sell their potatoes for a cheap price potatoes are quoted at 1 85 per cwt cat in idaho and as high as ag 2 15 yer er cwt on the eastern market it is estimated by some that the fatato is bushels short this bear i ear in united states and that the demand is equally is S great those whom I 1 h ve co operated with hiving a big percent age of clean seed this year will lw ba able to get larger prices for fort hoir no po for seed this coming spring we are always glad when we have new ne crops in our counties that give promise of pr great eat future arlue thie this year our potato t tup is is a areat reat im pro ement over any past season many patches are almost free from disease and are giving good yields our beet sugar fields are yielding we well 1 and our farmers who grew good onica this year are getting excellent prices the increased beld are div ing good profits to the farmers tuis thia year as the prices are good T the small mall berry business seems to ne be 0 one of great promise ir this part of the state the soil is a good soil for small berries as well as the larg er fruits and our climate here gevea the berries a beautiful color and a delicious flavor one of the best raspberries that has come to my attention is the alton improved red raspberry rasp berrS I 1 would like to see every farmer grow this berr especially sufficient quantities for home use it is a large beautiful red rasp berry of extra fine quality one of the promising features of this plant hardy and is is that it ia 6 extremely I 1 able to live through our cold opte I 1 of the state dry winters in this part without freezing down under favorable wea weather ther condition conditi or oca s this raspberry will remain in full fruiting for over three months bearer of fruit enormous it Is jn an and commences commence a to ripen its enormous crop a about out july 1st ast re mainaga in full fruiting during the months of july august and september we have a few of these wonderful raspberries in this part of the state and I 1 feel to advise the farmers to try to get a start of them for the small fruits bring very good prices on our local market I 1 visited ff A of wellington some time ago and he informed me that he might have somewhere about plants to spare and he would let each farmer have a few while his iiii supply lasts mr said he would be glad to give prices to any one in these two counties and and advise thea them how to propagate them in the fall of the year after the sap has gone down is a good time to plant strawberries also do excel tio nally well in this part of the state and I 1 know from definite figures of yields that I 1 have in my Dos possession session that we would do well to raise more of this and other small fruit crops such as gooseberries and currants very truly yours ROBERT H 11 STEWART county agricultural agent |
