| Show ON THE BEAM with at al I 1 on the morning of june 21 24 our party ot of newspaper people departed for a a days visit at historic williamsburg williams liams burg with a short stop en route at the mariners marinero Ma museum this spot was most interesting with its live five galleries ot of museum pieces and the walls walla lined with figureheads figure heads from ships ot of ancient times the collection ot of ship models la Is outstanding exhibits include navigational instruments ship equipment whaling and fishing gear ceramics sailors handiwork a collection ot of prints and paintings and a unique small cratt craft collection A marine library contains some volumes also on display are submarines of 0 the one and two man type used during world war II 11 as well as modern torpedoes 0 one n e could spend a whole day at this spot we were fortunate on our visit to williamsburg to have as our guide the lady who trains the guides tor for this historic spot the most imposing structure at williamsburg liams burg Is the Gov governors ernoes palace which was perhaps the handsomest estate in colonial america seven royal governors and patrick henry and thomas jefferson the first two governors of 0 the commonwealth lived here built between 1706 and 1720 the palace has been reconstructed on its original foundations and magnificently restored to its former beauty of greatest interest to us was the colonial capitol building tor for it was here on may 29 1765 that patrick henry made his fiery protest against the stamp act when he rose to his feet and cried caesar had his brutus charles the first his cromwell and george the third at this point cries of treason broke out but patrick henry thundered on may profit by their example it if this be treason make the most of it in williamsburg burg Is tb the e raleigh tavern center of the cites political and social activity here jefferson danced with his bis fair belinda washington dined and revo lutio nary patriots used their tavern as a favored rendezvous ren devous it was in the appollo room that hat students of william and mary are said bald to have founded the phi beta kappa society in 1776 our in williamsburg also took us to the bakery where breads and ad cakes are baked with the same recipes used in colonial times these wares are for sale to the public our time was limited but we did get to visit the print shot shop which is also a going concern and the printer does work on order tor for the public paper is manufactured especially ally tor for the shop under the same processes of colonial times and the printer mixes his own ink in much the same fashion as his forefathers needless to say all equipment dates to colonial times next week well conclude this r series erie with an account of our trip up the east shoie of maryland aryland Af and virginia |
