Show morgan lions club to sponsor highway safety campaign under sponsorship of the morgan lions club safety committee a highway safety campaign is being launched this week with businessmen and individuals of morgan in this drive to save lives and reduce highway accidents through an educational campaign the lions club safety committee is comprised of ber nard ted london and delbert robison businessmen and individuals who are bringing this message to the attention of the citizens of morgan county are south side store taggarts Tag garts canyon camp creamers Cr eagers barber shop vallis theatre alei ner garage first national bank stewarts confectionery gateway service the wheel mt alt green park greens cafe and service station tucker service station carls shoe shop J williams and sons co russ and roy eddington bros earl halls and sons afrank F ulrich olsen chevrolet co valley implement co devils sude slide store eail butters john J johnson cleaners hopkins II confection ery morgan billiards butters electric and barber shop H H francis market lew rose dairy heiners confectionery dark clark bros produce morgan city wasatch service station stearns steams rogers alag mfg co and morgan county news this highway safety campaign is the second to be directed by the utah state press association n in in cooperation with local civic clubs and individuals and in a statement gov herbert B maw says in helping to reduce the fatalities on our highways through your safety campaign in 1947 a reduction that was accomplished in the face of a heavy increase in highway traffic you made a tremendous contribution to the citizens of utah for which I 1 am deeply grateful and you fulfilled admirably your pledge made at the conference I 1 called in september of 1946 to assist in publicizing the need for greater safety on our highways current traffic records indicate that the gain we made in 1947 has not been maintained thus far in in 1948 so your renewed efforts are doubly important at this time not only to try for further reductions but to hold the reductions we have already made 1 I understand the campaign now to be launched under direction of the utah state press association will continue through the balance of 1948 I 1 commend each individual newspaper and those sponsoring i ng this campaign for the efforts devoted to this cause and I 1 recommend full support of it to every citizen of the state opening of the campaign is timed to coincide with the beginning of the official state automobile inspection spec tion period which began on march 15 it consists of safety articles prepared by national safety experts graphic illustrations ol of the right and wrong way to proceed in highway traffic editorial material and one half page advertisements all to each month for the next 10 months each of the advertisements through the use of mother goose characters and jingles depicts one of the 04 chief causes of highway acci accidents and supplies the proper remedy in referring to this newspaper campaign major general philip B fleming chairman of the presidents highway safety conference states this newspaper campaign contributed materially to the reduction of the highway fatality rate from 90 99 persons per hundred million vehicle miles of travel in 1940 to an all time low of 8 85 7 pers persons per hundred million vehicles miles during 1947 in addition to the governor the campaign has been endorsed by the utah safety council the state road commission and other state officials |
