Show cattle theft suspect returned after arrest in washington monday an ogden man is at liberty under a 1000 bond and another man is being returned from pasco wash by two weber county deputies to answer charges of cattle rustling which allegedly took place on the range in the hunts ville peterson area in morgan and weber counties carl IL II carter of ogden has been released bail he is charged with illegal possession of meat an indictable misdemeanor being returned from washington is ralph richards wanted on a felony warrant for grand larceny involving theft of cattle this leaves at large only one person wanted in connection with the meat theft he is raymond grant ogden A fourth person jack shaw has been b c en released r on recognizance officials stated that probably no charges will be filed against shaw ile he was in possession of the car used for transporting the beef but was not involved in the actual theft richards had been detained by pasco police after he had surrena axed monday afternoon police quoted richards as saying he gave himself up because he was hungry and that he had bad left ogden over a meat deal this weeks developments followed a weeks investigation by morgan county sheriff bernard dahlquist and jack card arid and joseph W child weber county deputy sheriffs the weber deputies joined dahlquist in the investigation last monday afternoon upon request the deputies met the sheriff on the summit of the huntsville peterson road where the heads and other parts of two cattle were found beginning work from several angles gl es the officers requested state inspectors to make an inspection of all meat lockers in the area for meat they also began looking for the means of transporting the meat from the scene of the killing tuesday morning the deputies received a report from the jackson finance co that a car it was financing was missing from the carl cail H carter used car lot at thirtieth and washington the deputies immediately started a search for the vehicle and found it wednesday morning on south washington blvd in the meantime state inspectors notified the officers that raymond grant and carl H carter last monday rented a cold storage locker at twenty sixth and quincy about two hours afterward three other persons had brought some beef to place in the locker the missing car was found to be in the possession of jack shaw 35 11 washington shaw was detained for questioning the car locked was opened and the deputies found the back seat missing and the back of the car splattered with blood and hair the latter similar to that of the stolen beef shaw told the deputies that richards arid and grant had possession of the car saturday ni night ht august 7 in a signed statement shaw told the deputies he went to a party at the carter home when jl I 1 got there richards and grant were not there they came in the house about two hours later without shirts and in old pants and headed for the bathroom I 1 shaw also said in his statement that he drove grant carter and richards to a ranch near callao last tuesday for the purpose of 0 obtaining brainin two bills of sale lor cattle t le or to buy two head of cattle they were unsuccessful officers said that on the return trip richards and grant were left in salt lake city and have not returned home sheriff dahlquist said carter and grant had rented the meat locker monday afternoon he said three other men had brought the beef in some time later the next day according to deputy card two men returned to get some of the beef but did not because the meat inspectors spec tors were there officers said they found a 33 35 caliber shell about ZU 51 feet from the killing scene he said one of the suspects own a 35 3 caliber rifle the complaints ivere prepared by district attorney glen W adams and will be filed in morgan county |
