Show attorney general gives opinion on use of nicknames in letters received from grover A giles attorney general the county clerk was given an opinion regarding degardin the use of nicknames on the official official ballots for the general election the opinion in part reads you are advised that we have no law relating to the use of nicknames the law prescribes that the candidates name shall be printed upon the ballot the name of a person consists of a surname and given name it is very common however for persons to use the initials of their given name and hence hold bold themselves out to the public under such name this however does not consist of nicknames it is the opinion of this office that you should either put the candidates full name upon the ballot or a surname and his initials if a nickname is used it should immediately follow the given name and be placed in brackets you are advised that such an officer should sign official papers an and d should be bonded under the name by which he is elected if such name includes a nickname then he should include the nickname in his signature in answer to an inquiry as to adding the nickname to a nomination petition edition already filed the attorney general replies please be advised that the name on the official ballot should be the same as on the nominating petition and you may not therefore lawfully add a nickname thereto there tb |
