Show new state federal program to attack bang s disease LOGAN bangs disease serious infectious disease of cattle will be attacked in utah in a new federal state cooperative program to obtain aid cattle growers may now contact their local veterinarian the state veterinarian at the state capitol or the inspector in charge of the bureau of animal industry federal building salt lake city A three method program has been drawn up b by y a committee commit te headed by dr wayne binns I 1 chairman of the utah state agriculture al college veterinary science department part ment the three approaches to the bangs disease or problem are as follows 1 A grower may agree to have all cattle over six months of age tested for the disease all r reactors are branded B on the right jay all calves between four and eight months of age are va vaccinated vaccina ceina ted with vaccine the owner may keep reactors in his herd as long as economically feasible but they may be sold only for slaughter 2 A grower may agree to tb the e test and slaughter method all animals in a herd are tested reactors are branded and calves between four and eight months are vaccinated vaccina ted all reacting animals must be sold and blau slaughtered 9 under federal supervision within IS 15 days after date of branding A federal state indemnity will be paid consisting for grade animals of 20 a head bead from each of the two governmental agencies and for registered animals 10 40 a head from each 3 vaccination of all negative animals in the herd is the third method all animals must be tested and all infected ones branded this an ann roach is only encouraged as a last resort to help control the disease in herds in which there is an active storm of abortion and many animals are infected this method must be approved by the attending veterinarian the state veterinarian and the inspector in charge bureau of animal industry before it becomes effective seriousness of the problem is shown by the fact that an estimated two million cattle carry brucella infection in this country about one fourth of these infected cattle it is estimated are furnishing raw milk and cre cream amito to the people no livestock disease has e ever v er been eradicated until the carri carriers ers were either destroyed or restricted in their movement officials point out permanent identification and aither either quarantine or slaughter of infected cattle are arc regarded as basic in any cooperative control and eradication program |
