Show SALUTE TO NATIONAL NEWSPAPER WEEK by kay kyser hey chillen chil cbill lun un pay attention class is is now in session and this is your 01 professor telling you its time you paid tribute to one of americas greatest institutions your hometown home town newspaper this is national newspaper week and no comedy of errors in fact its time we all agreed nothings more fun than a newspaper feeling very scholar ly at the moment id say that as the immediate reflection of a com mun itys taste and opinion your local newspaper is the crystallization of public thought and feeling not only that but you can I 1 swat flipe fl p with a newspaper and better for lining bureau drawers being a high class student myself ever since I 1 rocked rocky mount by winning the th zinc plated yo yo for being the best orator in the drum and bugle chowder and peanut racing corps I 1 remember when shakespeare referred to the seven ages of man now we can do that through newspapers first a baby has the comics read to him then he learns for himself soon the sport pages begin to interest him and then in school current event classes cause the news section to play a part in his life the amusement section is added when dating comes along then as young manhood is reached he begins to realize the news can affect him personally editorials become required reading the last stage is reached when grandpa removes his uppers and turns to the obituary page first instead of the comics americas free press is is one of the greatest bulwarks bulwa of democracy I 1 tip my tassel to it and recommend we all do the same the state capitol salt lake city utah it is a pleasure for me on this seventh annual observation of national newspaper week ot again salute the press of utah when this great state was founded years ago it was a part of the plan of that historic band of pioneers who settled here that as each community was established it should become self sufficient today that condition still exists with every newspaper in the state from the greatest metropolitan daily to the smallest weekly helping to maintain that self sufficiency in the community corn it serves the life of each community revolves around and is ia faithfully recorded in its newspaper this year as the entire state has joined in the celebration of its centennial year the newspapers have again exemplified the correctness ness of the theme they have adopted tor for this thin year the newspaper as a public servant not only have they helped make our centennial a success by the wide publicity carried to every citizen of utah and to the nation but in in word and picture they have faith fully recorded these events event for fo posterity As utah was founded on the principle that men are free so be haa the press of utah in serving 1 utahna earned the right to the slogan your newspaper serve freedom by serving you P signed HERBERT B MAW governor |
