Show to an AIR by BV Qa Mci buzed Bw zed baff FLIGHT instruction A LESSON NUMBER i hank bank sorry sony guess rm fm 0 so o anxious to learn I 1 did is unconscious unconsciously s t y 14 robinson yeah well remember rem r cempe embe if 11 you want to go woolgathering wool gathering W airplanes not the place for the e 7 V keep your mind on a single tri now look down hank how flow strange things took a as here the hangars look no bigg an shacks robinson cometh have to learn to identify b s and places in spite of the a e look from above see that hig y over there line bank Hank yeah looks like a thin br bruan 40 n robinson itt its a good long straight stretch of roadbed and I 1 am going to swing the plane into position to fly straight along the highway keeping to the right then ill let you take the stick and put your feet on the rudder bar hank geel ceel that will be greatt robinson all right take hold ot of the stick put your feet on the rudder bar and keep the nose of the plane on the horizon keep the stick in neutral dont grab the stick or jam down the rudder bar lust just light ly easily naturally now see what you can do elnel look out the nose of the plane Is falling hey your left wing Is low youre side slipping inward pull the stick over the other way now look toward the highway youve got so tar far away you can hardly see it because you were nervous and let the plane get off course look at the altimeter what does it say bayt hank reads 1500 feet robinson right how do you feel flank Hank fine as silk robinson good now ru ill take over going to set her down in a minute or two and ill show how easy landing Is hank flank but I 1 thought that making a good food landing is one of the most important things for a pilot to know robinson it Is what I 1 meant to say ay Is that ill show you how easy it is I 1 when you know how to land but levs be more specific there are three things involved in making a landing the gliding approach to the field leveling off over the field setting the plane down and guiding it slowly down the runway until it stops hank flank 1 I think it is as easy as you make it sound robinson but it Is after you learn how you see hank you get all these things fixed in your mind to so that everything becomes almost automatic notice that im heading beading into the wind for a landing hank 1 I noticed Is that necessary robinson it Is very necessary turning the plane into a head wind for or landing means that the speed of the plane Is decreased by just the speed of the wind and the more gently you can glide a plane into a landing the better hank flank but bug how can a fellow up here be sure of the wind direction robinson robins on theres hardly a landing field that equipped with a wind indicator in plane sight but in case of an emergency landing be able to determine the wind direction by the play of the wind on trees on water on smoke from chimneys or even from clothes clothe stud foged and bd control rudder control rudder rudar nahl wit end lib left L hanging on a line if the wind Is if fairly brisk you can glide in at a steeper angle than if you are coming in on almost dead air of course a landing on a well bald out field la is much simpler than one where youve been forced down in pasture or wheatfield but you always have to remember that a pilot never knows when something will go wrong and hell have to land in the most impossible places and under thi the most unfavorable conditions so you have to plan your landing before you start to make it IL you want to know in advance that you can make the landing spot that there are no obstacles in the path and try not to pick a landing spot just beyond some tall fail obstruction in that case probably have to come down at too steep an angle but on a well laid out field well do it this way hank bank why alid lid you make a circle instead of landing robinson you see a plane on the field hank vo no 1 I notice robinson have you already tor for gotten what whai I 1 told you about keeping your eyes open and looking in all at the same time hank ranka 1 remember you told me but J just t look down PR robinson obin ii and where would you took albok it if you were coming down theres there a plane on the field right where I 1 intended to land A fixed rule of flying Is that if a plane Is taking oft off or landing you stay os off until the field Is clear tor for a landing hano hank so you are just circling until unlit it U is clear robinson right and now we can put her down first I 1 cut the gun hank flank cut the gun robinson that means close the throttle the purpose Is to lose as much altitude as possible at the lowest flying speed that puts the plane into a glide the angle of the glide should be sharp enough to prevent stalling but not steep enough to cause an increase of speed it should be just what it says gays a glide a long easy smooth approach to the field hank Ws we teen seem to be coming down just that way robinson we are and now we level off weri were about twenty five feet oft off the ground to so to level I 1 pull back the stick and hold it see how ashes losing speed hey dont lean over the side of the plane your shifted weight will throw the plane out of ba balance lancel hank flank cut but how can you tell how far abole abate the ground the plane is robinson sit straight to in the seat and look ahead just to the side of the nose now were coming to the stall I 1 pull the stick back farther and farther to keep the plane from nose diving and that raises the elevators as high as possible now were only about three feet from the ground could let her drop now but well ease her down and down and now were only a toot foot from the ground now with the stick way back we make a perfect three point landing both wheels and the tall skid down on the ground at the same time hank agosh gosh bill but that landing was a beauty beaudy smooth as glass robinson the kind of landing lading to make hank but remember even the best of pilots once in a while will turn in a bumpy landing robinson be here at ten tomorrow morning it if the weather Is decent well take off hank okay oay S so 0 long until unlit tomorrow robinson hello hamill hank flank good morning looks like its good flying beather uen lier or would I 1 know robinson itt ira splendid flying weather got your helmet and goggles hank right bigit here d robinson good climb up and well get going fix your safety belt hank it i fixed Robi robeson lison were going to do some real flying this morning all ali right casey casey switch off and throttle closed robinson switch oft off and throttle closed casey contact robinson contact here we go hank put on your earphones hank flank gee 1 I forgot that robinson have to stop forgetting hank if youre going to make a pilot youve got to go over and over in your mind the things to remember until remember them without being conscious of it but I 1 think learn all right hank bank veil I 1 sure lure will try robinson make the grade oil au right now the airs so still that it make any difference which way we take off but well go this way because it gives us the longest run all set hank all set let robinson okay here we go ill keep the controls until we get altitude what does your all lmeter altimeter read now hank bank one thousand feet robinson Ho binson youve learned to read the altimeter all right and now im going 0 0 o teach you how bow to keep the tha plane on a straight course take hold of the controls no no dont grip just sort of feel eel them until you ge get t the idea I 1 just wan want t you to feel what happens when I 1 am handling the controls I 1 hardly move either the stick or the rudder see how easily the plane responds now were flying straight and level look at that barn over therel there hank bank 1 I see its it il robinson all right I 1 am going to let you take over and I 1 want you to fly straight for or that barn remember dont grip the stick just hold it easy now im taking my hands band oft off for ard and speed of motor stick coo ight and left ol 01 you go ahead and see ee what you can do doing line fine hank watch the nose pull the stick back a little keep the nose on the horizon the best guide for level flying if you happen to get into tog fog and cant see the horizon know when youre nosing down the revo lations per minute instrument will show an increase of speed if the nose Is down keep the nose on the horizon arizon good now were over the barn and we want to turn round so that well fly in the opposite direction that means that we must bank to the left first gently apply pressure on the stick forward and to the left at the same ume time apply pressured pressure on the left rudder pedal until the proper degree of bank and radius of turn are obtained As A the ship begins to bank a slight backward pressure Is also applied to the stick release left rudder pressure allowing the airflow from the propeller to streamline the rudder to the radius of the turn already obtained still holding back pressure bring the stick back to neutral position this Is the complete control action required to make a turn to the left or right the recovery to straight and level flight Is accomplished by exerting pressure to the right on the stick and rudder and easing oft off the back pressure of the stick As the wings return to level position release all pressures from stick and rudder pedals and now weve made the turn and you did a swell job tor for a first try next time do better well try it again remember put the stick over and the rudder in the direction you want to go it now apply back pressure on the stick goedl but dont hold the stick so tight you dont have to use force just sort of lead the thing now youre doing fine and of course if you want to go in the opposite direction you do just the opposite of what youve just done shall we try a right bank now hank ill try but I 1 dont think I 1 can do that so well somehow it doesn doean t feel eel just right to me robinson I 1 know A right bank easy for a lot of fellows at first but you have to be able to bank right as well as left if youre going to be a good flier now bank to the right right stick and rudder redder we sure fell out of that one ill take control the reas reason n we I 1 went into a dive was that you apply back pressure on the stick the engine pulled the nose down now try it again and dont get excited ill take over it if you dont get it just right but make it now let her go fine do better than that myself now do another to the left this tune time put the stick over a little farther and when you get her well on her side put on the top rudder and pull the stick way back see sea how fast you turned that ume time to come out of a bank after you ge get t round move the stick a moment before the rudder past the central position to the opposite side after you get the rudder in central you return the stick to vertical now do you think you can do a really fast bank and turn hank flank I 1 d anni nr lenin hut but I 1 can try |
