Show new industry for utah k M if v n R e a 1 4 new zinc plant under construction at tooele thoele utah very little it if any of 0 its metallic resources are lost to the state ot of utah fa fenced cc d N nith ith the necessity ot of treating lower lover and lower grade ores smelters shelters sm elters ot of utah have advanced metallurgy to a point that only a negligible part ol of the inet metallic allic content of 0 the ores now flow to the tailings gs pond prior to the early twenties much ot of the zinc in ores ot of utah was lost in in the smelt ins inz processes and flowed through the plant and into the tailings pond not only did miners lose loge the cinc content ot of their ores but they vere nere penalized tor for it naturally this meant much loss to the operators and to the state early in the twenties the smelt ers met this situation with the development of 0 selective flotation at that time the mining industry was threatened with virtual exec tion as much ot of the higher grade ore had been mined and only the lo 10 low w grade lead zinc zine sulphide ores fo found und on deeper levels ot of the mine was available selective flotation gave the industry a new lease on life as it meant that the operator was paid tor for loth both lead and line now comes another development of significance to the state the international smelting smelling Sm elting refining company has worked out a process to treat the old slag dump in which the lost zinc of 0 former years was stored thereby creating industry payrolls and taxes upon a resource that was formerly worthless I 1 coming at this time the new process Is doubly important as it will help hell to furnish a much needed metal hietal tor for national defense the international which already pours annually into the channels ot of industry throughout utah approximately in the form ot of payrolls supply purchases c construction 0 n st railroad freight taxes etc will add substantially to its utah operations with this plant the plant tor for the recovery of 0 the zinc will cost approximately 3 and Is expected to be ready tor for operation in the fall all ot of 1941 after its completion the plant will furnish steady employment tor for about 35 men |
