ancient filling tar for quilts quills often in colonial times filling tor for quilts consisted of cotton not infrequently quilts were filled with fleece very much like wool bats but in early days fleece destined for or such use was inadequately washed and consequently retained much of the natural animal oil which in either heat or dampness gave forth a disagreeable odor and was used out of necessity rather than choice worn warn woolen sheets and blankets also were used as quilt fills after they had begun to jail all into holes
