activities of the current session it if the present rate of law making is maintained until its close for more than live five weeks the legislators have been proposing new laws scores and scores arthem of them and arguing arguin regarding their respective spec tive merits or demerits the net result has been the placing on the states statute book of exactly I 1 five new laws and none or triese are of such character as to affect the commonwealth and its people in any but bd the most cursory fashion the appointment of a senate sifting committee and turning over to it of all bills on the upper house calendar for action may speed matters in that branch of the legislature now that th the senate has passed a direct primary measure it seems certain house approval being practically assured that utah electors will have their first opportunity to nominate party candidates by a direct vote instead of at conventions at regular primary elections in september proceeding prece eding the general election in november what the joint legislative committee appointed to 0 investigate state departments is expected to uncover remains a mystery but any person interested interest sd Bd in filing any complaint against any department for consideration by the committee is invited to do so immediately on the other hand if any citizen desi desires resto to commend any department he may do so any complaint or cr matter there are other bills pending which would appropriate more than for old age pensions a su sum m greater than the estimated loss in revenues that would be occasioned by enactment of the homestead exemption law and no definite action has yet been taken on this measure in the house where it is being considered in committe the house passed the first of three measures important to the small independent business men of the state in the form of H B 4 by hale boyden marthakis holbrook and pett designed to put into operation 1 in utah the best features of the on fair trade practices to
