| Show i i I 1 I 1 HAVE YOU HEARD the last statistical bulletin of the metropolitan life insurance co carries the report that the combined death rate from measles scarlet fever ever whooping w cough and diphtheria the four principal communicable muni cable diseases of childhood has reached a new minimum this lear fear this information takes on an I 1 even greater significance when the mortality experience from these infections f is viewed over a period ot of years twenty five years ago the death rate from this group or of diseases was 6 per in contrast to per in 1935 a decline of 81 per cent instead of causing 25 out of every deaths thoy now cause only 12 out of every in the last quarter century each disease in the group has shown a decided downward trend the sharpest death decline being in diphtheria the results attained in com batting the latter bear witness to the extraordinary effectiveness of ithe the prophylactic and therapeutic measures applied on a large scale morgan county has been very f fortunate or in receiving many of these I 1 measures I 1 although no such specific deap 1 ion on has been available for the ther other I 1 ills of childhood nevertheless whooping L scarlet ar fever measles and whooping I 1 cough have recorded large declines unquestionably the downward I 1 trend of the mortality for these dis I 1 eases is the fruit of a rising stand ard of living and the spread ot of hygienic knowledge VERLE BAKER county nurse |
