Show THE COUNTRY I 1 by ROBERT V FLEMING vice president american bankers banker association there is a growing appreciation n both on the part ot of the people and the government ern ment ot of the iha earnest and sincere efforts being made by bankers to aid la in recovery it Is desir desirably ablo that we miss no anity to foster pub lie anderst understanding anding 0 ot f the e b bankers an grotth kerse p problems em s we W e are living in an age ot of complex and upset economic conditions our af a fairs are closely interrelated inter related not only within witt tin the fl V FLEMING confines ol at our own borders but extend to other countries throughout the world the greatest difficulty I 1 think the greatest difficulty we have to overcome in america today is due to our impatience with the progress we are malting making towards recovery we must realize that while the government can help by directing some measures for re ilet ilef and recovery we must help ourselves by doing our share to give impetus to the governments efforts we have the same country county and basically the same businesses factories and people we had prior to the depression and business initiative must step forward it if real recovery is lo io be achieved the theory we often bear expressed that banks create business activity la Is wrong banking can only make a supplementary tary contribution to business activity bankers have the facilities and the desire to extend credit but business must initiate activity by seeking the credit which Is readily available to all worthy borrowers let it be said tor for business however that business men are as eager as bankers to contribute towards recovery I 1 think some of the trouble lies in the fact act that too many legislative measures have been proposed for reform which leave an uncertainty in the minds of business leaders as to their eventual outcome and effect consequently they hesitate to expand until the probable effects ot of such legislation are known |
