Show FIRE SEASON approaches during the next month or two j many people will be camping alk hiking and visiting the beautiful mountain retry retreats of the wasatch national forest the forest service is delirious desi rious of making your trip into the mountains pleasant tor for you you can greatly assist by being careful with your camp fires and cigarettes the fire hazard on the lower areas is high at the present time and alid may continue to get higher if weather conditions stay hot and dry the heavy growth of vegetation principally cheat grass has created an unusually high fire hazard on the lower portions of the forest last year there were 78 I 1 ires fires on the wasatch national forest of which 64 or 82 per cent were caused by human carelessness the fire in mill creek canyon burned acres which cost 2354 to suppress an and d it did consider considerable considerably abl e damage to the watershed A heavy rain soon soon after the fire caused a flood I 1 in mill creek canyon which was not only dangerous to human property but closed the road for several hours the records in this office indicate that campers started 30 of the fir fires es smokers 18 other carelessness 16 and lightning only 14 if we can eliminate fires caused by human carelessness we ran can easily handle the lightning fires because our records over a period of years have indicated very closely where we may expect lightning fire to occur in case of fires within the wasatch forest report it promptly to the nearest forest ranger or call the forest supervisor in the federal building wasatch extension there will be someone at the telephone continuously during the period if highest fire hazard C J OLSEN |
