Show peruvian mummies are shown at field museum an exhibit of so called mummies and reproductions of two opened graves raves of ancient peru are shown la the hall of central and south american archeology archaeology arche at F field beld museum of natural history Ui story the mummies which differ greatly from rom those of 0 egypt are more exactly described as desiccated bodies these thesa were pa packed aked in bundles which were wera found buried tit at a depth of several feet in the famous necropolis polls or burying ground of ancon peru two of the mummy packs lave have been opened revealing the bodies inside they are in a good state of preservation due according to J eric thompson assistant curator of central and south american archeology archaeology arche to the extreme aridity of the coastal plains of peru the majority mijo rity of peruvian mummies were not artificially preserved but in some cases the bodies were eviscerated evis while in others resin was applied as a preservative the graves which have been reproduced dite date to the period about A D 1250 one contains three mummy bundles bundies apparently two twi women and a small child the sex se of it the two adults Is indicated by wonie ns work baskets which were buried with them and which appear alving the contents of the grave as now exhibited bags of oc cocoa leanes chich the ancient peruvians chewed as a stimulant fiher ornaments na ments spindles and other objects are also included in the grave the second grave was covered by a roof two feet below the surface of the tha ground this was elaborately constructed ted and Is among the best preserved found at ancon this roof shown in the exhibit consisted of ehret inches of hard white clay beneath which were a layer of plant leaves two mats of reeds and rafters of alga robba wood |
