Show ENGINEER MAKES REPORT ON ECHO PROJECT the monthly report of F F smith i construction engineer of the bureau of reclamation shows that the earth and rock sections of the echo dam were completed during the month of july and that the contractors A guthrie and co 1 of portland had started installation of the operating machinery and mechanism the clay sand and gravel portion of the dam totaling cubic yards of material was completed on july 15 while the rockwork on this portion was finished on july 22 after the earth and rock embankment had been completed the spillway intake approach channel was completed ready for the placing of the rock lacing facing the four sixteen by seventeen radial gates were installed during the month and the concrete counterweights ter for use in their operation also completed these gates are used to control the flood flow when the reservoir is full fall to normal the placing of the emergency or slide gates was started on july 23 these gates two in number five by six feet in size are to be placed in the itlie gate chamber in the center canter ot of the tunnel arid and will deliver the water from the reservoir into two lines of 72 inch pipe which in turn will carry the water to the 60 inch needle valves of the lower end of the outlet tunnel these valves will control the irrigation flow of the river during the irrigation season the outlet pipe is about feet in length each and the work of installing the pipe was under way at the close ol of the month during july the contractor worked an average force of ef so 80 men and two hear of stock materially re I 1 dicing cing his force on the completion 01 of the earth and rock work and beginning the loading out of excavation ind and hauling equipment the temporary storage for arri gation purposes started in may and amounting to acre feet was completely drawn out of the reservoir on july 18 after which only the actual flow of the river was available for lower river users work on the clearing of the echo reservoir site was continued by the heiselt construction company but the burning of the brush and trees was somewhat delayed on account of tile the water stored in the he reservoir making it impossible to work all the area S H newell and co contractors on the weber provo division canal worked an average force of 63 men and 10 head of stock on the canal and structure work the large drag line completed the excavation of the deep cut near the provo river and was moved into an other canal excavation excavation about cubie cubic yards of material during the month the smaller drag line was worked on structure excavation and gravel pit operation during the month work was also carried on in the placing of tanal canal crossings flumes blumes and siphons A crew of men was engaged on fencing canal right of way starting about the middle of the month and completing over a mils mile of various kinds of fencing weather conditions were ideal tor for construction work no time being lost on climatic conditions |
