Show I 1 i j UTAH EXTENSION LEADER GIVES suggestions FOR increasing production As part of national dairy month activities to stimulate milk pro in the state lyman rich utah extension service dairyman I 1 this week outlined suggestions for I 1 increasing herd mr richs first suggestion Is to feed more grain over the summer months when production tends to fall off if good cows aie fed grain at the rate of one pound for each six pounds of milk along with the good roughage they will eat they will produce from 20 to 25 percent more milk than if fed only good roughage the dairyman stated if practicable the suggests milking three times a day instead of twice as another production aid cows milked three times a day for periods of a month or so can be ex expected to give 10 percent more milk he added keep cowson cows on good pasture is th next suggestion rf if pastures are not good however feed them all the hay or silage or both that they will eat grass silage Js is and excellent supplement to poor pastures and also is a good grain supplement he said during the summer months its advisable to keep plenty of water before the cows mr rich says and its important also to see sec that the cows are treated gently other suggestions include keep ing the cows comfortable having cows in good condition at calving time and have them calver calve evely 12 months allowing each cow to dry period of eight weeks and i keeping more milking cows i culling Is especially important imports nt during this year when dairymen axe are striving for a 15 percent increase in production the dairy leader said and culling should be less close than in previous years |
