Show great Geat damage done to sugar suar beets by web worms A serious infestation of web worms in the sugar beets has caused much concern among the beet growers of the county co agent richards Eich ards states that severe damage has been done some of the fields before spraying could be done during the past week three spraying machines owned by the amalgamated sugar company have been in operation in the county under the direction of mr barton field man for the sugar company the paris green gree used in spraying has been distributed by the county agent who states that approximately 1500 pounds of paris green have been used in in the past six days mr richards also states that there are a few of these worms each year that live on pig weeds red roots and the sugar beets beeta but this is the first time in the history of the county that there has been a sufficient number to do damage this is undoubtedly due to the dry season last year and the fact that the ground was not frozen during the winter which made it possible for the insect to live through the winter mr richards also states that this infestation came immediately after a serious outbreak of cut worms in cabbage and some other crops A large quantity of poison bran mash was prepared by the county agent and used by the farmers the cul worms were controlled and the web worms began there is no relationship between the two pests but it is unusual to have all of these pests in one season it is hoped that no other serious difficulties will be encountered before the crops are matured |
