schooling schooling school school- ing has bas made made me appreciate and understand our democratic tic government The efficiency of our government was wa revealed revealed revealed re re- to we Girl I am deeply grateful to the city county and state officials who took time out of their busy schedules to tell us of their many duties pertaining to their offices Before attending attending attend attend- ing Girls' Girls State I felt there was no purpose for me as a citizen to support the city functions I seemed to be only one person and my responsibility responsibility meant nothing In Singleton City we elected a mayor and set up a complete government in two days There were only 24 citizens to a city and each had three or four jobs which were very import import- ant As a city fire chief it was my responsibility to turn turnoff r off ott all the lights in my city t It i was only a small job but none else would do it because it was my responsibility As a judge of election nobody else could fill my office because I had been sworn in I now realize how bow important it is that we support our city com com- This really meant the very very most to me Another choice experience was being a state delegate and voting in inthe inthe inthe the party conventions for our state candidates A representative from the legislature met with us to explain explain explain ex ex- plain the passing of a bill Our model Senate and House of Representatives then passed three bills while we citizens watched Also AIso we had a regular regular regular regu regu- lar supreme court case in which we actually had bad a trial with the help of two county attorneys and sentenced the guilty Along with the freedoms taught at Girls' Girls State we Lu shared the freedom of reli reli- gion It was a pleasure to listen listen listen lis lis- ten to a Catholic priest a Presbyterian minister and a Methodist minister We found the similarity in all of our past teachings We learned that we must accept Christ and live as he would like us to under our democratic government gov gov- We each had an opportunity to pass our many talents onto on onto onto to our fellow Girls' Girls atour at atour atour our talent nights and devo- devo At each talent night the Ind individual vidual cities had 15 minutes to put on a skit with all the scenery we could make makein in our very busy schedules All in all most girls showed a wonderful talent At Girls State we we heard this thought which tells of our freedoms Freedom is not free and should not be taken for granted It was w won o n through sacrifice It can be lost just as surely just as completely and just as permanently permanently permanently per per- tax by tax subsidy by subsidy and regulation by regulation as it can be lost bullet by bullet bomb by bomb orf or missile or missile by missile We as Girls' Girls must strive always to support our government in all that it does and stick close to our coun coun- try We the citizens of Girls' Girls State are the hope of America In our hand lies the future What we learn and teach about democracy will strengthen strengthen strengthen streng streng- then or weaken our American unity I would deeply like to thank the American Legion Auxiliary Auxiliary Auxiliary iary who gave me this wonderful wonderful wonderful won won- opportunity It is something something something some some- thing I will never forget It will make me a better citizen if I but put into practice all allI I have learned The friends I gained there will be life long Thank you again American Legion Legion Legion Le Le- gion Auxiliary from the bottom of my heart tb By SALLY SMITH Sl During the week of June 7 to the charming girls gathered at Logan for the annual session of Utah Girls' Girls State One of the most important things that we learned while there was of the great responsibility responsibility that we as future citizens citizens citi citi- zens of our nation have to gain as much knowledge as possible concerning state and national issues so that when we become of age and have a voice in the government we can make the correct choices To impress this upon our minds symposiums were presented presented presented pre pre- to us each morning by city county and finally state officials They explained the governmental system in each of these areas how they were organized and operated As Girls' Girls we then applied what we had learned by nominating girls to fill positions positions po po- comparable to those in our government Campaign enthusiasm enthusiasm enthusiasm en en- was aroused by songs chants and the clever cleverand cleverand cleverand and meaningful part w was s in which the candidates gave their speeches We then exercised exercised exercised exer exer- the right to 10 vote and elected to office the candidate of our choice A most impressive instance came about when I I joined with other girls for the first time as a u unit n nit I t and pledged allegiance to io the flag realizing that we were all living living living liv liv- ing in a free country which is strong and everlasting The feeling of patriotism was had by every girl and it continued throughout our stay When the week came to a close each girl had the cherished cherished cherished cher cher- memory of the friendships friendships friendships friend friend- ships she had gained and the choice experiences such as participating on talent night or just laughing together over something funny I want to thank the American Ameri Amen can Legion Auxiliary for this valuable experience that I had Through it I learned the true meaning of what the flag of our country stands for and the responsibility I have as asan asan asan an American citizen to uphold it |
