Show Snow now Rites Honor Goodwin Family a Each year recently some family has been honored at the Snow College commencement commence commence- 4 ment exercises for outstanding outstanding ing service to the school especially especially especially es es- es- es in the matter of providing pro providing providing pro pro- viding students This year the family so honored honored honored hon hon- ored was that of Mr and Mrs Lewis A. A Goodwin GOOdwi Goodwin of Ephraim formerly of Grover Wayne County The mother Thisbe Hanks Goodwin and nine of her 10 children attended Snow College and the tenth one graduated from Snow High School The family was toasted by Mrs Mary Peacock of Manti ManU who stated that Mr and Mrs Goodwin unpretentious mode modest modest mod mod- e est t were reluctant to have attention attention at at- focused in their direction tion What have we done to observe this recognition they queried This obvious humility is part of their charm All ten of the Goodwin chilli children chil chil- S dren were born at Grover and li grew up in that community at atthe atthe the foot of Boulder Mountain 7 where they learned hard work cooperation responsibility and J sacrifice also learned to love the Lord and the wonders of His creation The resourceful parents managed to send the sons and daughters one after the other to Snow College It sometimes strained the family budget and andone andone andone one year they found it necessary necessary necessary sary to sell more cattle than usual to help finance the boys through college The cattle buyer told Mr Goodwin that he was educating your boys right off the farm And it proved true Not one is now nowa a farmer The fathers father's answer at t the time was If that's what it takes to help my boys find a more productive life that's just what I want to do As more of the family members members members mem mem- bers reached college age Mr Goodwin sold his property in Wayne County and brought his family to Ephraim It was not easy leaving the place where the family had form formed d where Mr Goodwin had been an Bishop for 25 years and where there were many treasured places Mrs Peacock described the family nine of whom graduated graduated graduated from Snow as follows Lewis A. M S. S degree in social work David graduate of the University University University Uni Uni- of Utah at present is purchasing agent of business machines for the University Salt Lake Gladys wife and mother resides resides resides re re- re- re sides in Los Angeles where her husband Glade Arnoldson Arnold Arnold- son is a telegrapher for the Union Pacific Railroad Five of the boys have been in the service three during World War II and two in the Korean conflict Mr Goodwin and three of his sons have filled missions for the Church All but three of the family members were able to be present present pres pres- ent for the occasion Walter WaIter has just been released from the Walter Reed Hospital where he underwent knee surgery sur sur- sur- sur gery Gladys had sickness in her family Victor was on a trip to Texas where his wife's family was holding a reunion Raymond and wife and two sons also visited the old home in Wayne County while out this way from Salt Lake City Kent and Betty Christensen also went to Logan where both graduated from Utah State University Kent is now working working working work work- ing on a masters master's degree at atthe atthe atthe the University of Utah |
