HAASER Porcupines at the pre present ent time are causing a great heal deal of damage to the young forest forest forest for for- est trees tree on the ManU Manti Ranger District There is an urgent need for controlling them The common belief that porcupines are protected protected protected pro pro- by law Jaw as an emergency food tood for people lost in the wilds has no basis in fact They may be killed at any season of the year and without without without with with- out a game license Your help is needed Destroy them when and where they are found The young porcupines are born in the spring They weigh about a pound at birth and are well furred with quills Porcupines feed teed and travel both day and night but are usually most active during the soft light of evening and morning They do not hibernate hibernate hibernate hiber hiber- nate but remain active the year around They consume succulent plants of many species Their summer food is juicy ground vegetation often cultivated crops In the fall and winter they eat mostly the bark and leaves of con coniferous erous trees Your help in controlling these animals will aid in preventing preventing preventing pre pre- venting excessive damage to our forests of the future |
