S Woolley is to the modern Utah industrial community community 7 1 what Brigham Young was a century ago That is putting him himin himin in exclusive company as history j will attest But the record of Dilworth Woolley supports such sucha t 4 a stand Dilworth is the current pres president president ident i- i dent of Utah Pro-Utah instigated the i move to create the Industrial A i i 1 Promotion Commission is literally literally liter liter- I ally the father of Utah's Freeport Freeport Free- Free I port Laws was chairman of the i former Industrial Development I Committee of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce and through his own companies Redman Redman Redman Red Red- man Warehousing Co and Redman Redman Redman Red Red- man Moving and Store Co has promoted Utah as the industrial and distribution gateway to the West As a young boy in Manti Dil Dil- worth was fascinated by the unique unique unique uni uni- uni- uni que geography of Utah But for some years he could never put his finger on just what it was that held his interest Certainly it didn't occur to him himat himat himat at the University of Utah where he obtained a BA degree in history and political science in 1927 Upon graduation he had no more direction than a fly I Iwas Iwas was the classic example of a aman aman aman man without a purpose and simply simply simply sim sim- ply looking for a job he says The first job turned out to be writing copy for an advertising firm Stevens and Wallis This start led to a better job with the Pacific Railway Advertising Co soiling selling rail car advertising In 1935 Dilworth Woolley called on Ben Redman founder of the Redman Van and Storage Co He was there to sell advertising instead he was sold himself on the Redman Co Within a afew afew afew few months he was hired as manager for the retiring Ben Redman and in 1936 with reorganization reorganization reorganization of the company was named vice president and general general general gen gen- eral manager Over the next several years the Redman Company grew and Dilworth Woolley's stature with it The only interruption came in 1942 when Dilworth then 38 was asked to activate his military military military mili mili- tary commission and serve his country in the World War conflict con can He did so and was made a captain at the Ft Douglas facility facility fa fa- fa in Salt Lake City In 1945 Dilworth returned to his old post maintained by Ben Redman who came out of retirement retirement re re- for the wars war's duration In that same year the Bekins family who had van and storage concerns in California Oregon Texas and Nebraska sought to form a national combine They needed Redmans Redman's ICe certificate certificate cate to accomplish the task They offered Mr Woolley and the Redman Company a fine opportunity opportunity opportunity op op- op- op and Redman took it Under the new arrangement Redman received 20 share in inthe inthe inthe the Bekins Van Lines In return they turned over the certificate and transport authority outside of Utah but retained those rights within the state Mr Woolley Woolley Woolley Wool- Wool ley was elected to the executive committee and ultimately served two years as president Another thing happened that year not as fortunate Bed Redman Redman Redman Red Red- man died Reorganization again became necessary Dilworth Woolley took over as president and B. B F F. Redman succeeded to chairman of the board Several years later Dilworth was struck again by Utah's unique unique uni uni- uni que geography Utah was the gateway to the west If it was profitable to truck from here it would be logical to store and distribute distribute distribute dis dis- dis- dis tribute from here Others had ona ona on ona a limited scale arrived at the same conclusion Dilworth had his eye on the Naval Depot at Clearfield field where more than sq ft of storage was soon to become idle And when the Navy decided to dispose of the space Redman was in there bidding Their bid was far short of the Schumacher winning bid Mr Woolley saw the potentials of being a part of that Clearfield depot and immediately immediately immediately im im- im- im mediately leased sq ft of space at the Depot The Redman Company was again reorganized This time the Redman Warehousing Corp was formed and became the parent company Redman Moving and Storage was made a wholly- wholly owned subsidiary Dilworth retained retained retained re re- position as president of both As Mr Woolley dealt deeper and deeper into the distribution game he became more and more aware of Utah's advantages and of some in Utah law In particular just across the border in Nevada that sister state was enjoying particular success from a Freeport Law which gave special exemptions to manufacturers and distributors distributors tors who held goods within a 12 month period of time Such a law Dilworth reasoned could only benefit Utah's distributive distributive distributive distri distri- position At that time he was chairman of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce's Industrial Industrial Industrial Indus Indus- trial Promotion Committee He took his proposal for Freeport legislation to the Chamber and enlisted solid support His committee committee committee com com- and the C. C of C C. C became the nucleus working for the new law Mr Woolley personally made this his crusade Almost everyday everyday every everyday day for four years he put in one oneto oneto oneto to four hours It is estimated that he spent hours selling Freeport Freeport Freeport Free- Free port first to the legislature and then to the people Its It's possible he worked harder than was necessary necessary necessary essary because when the legislature legislature legislature legis legis- lature brought it to the floor it passed both House and Senate with nary an opposing vote When it was put to the people of Utah in 1964 it passed in a land land- slide Since its in inception eption the FreePort Freeport Free Free- port Law has spurred Utah's distributions business ten fold It has produced new employment new money and benefits to all corners of the state The nucleus of the Freeport push was a desirable organization tion and a potential force to bring about change in other areas Thus out of this nucleus Utah Pro-Utah was formed Again it was Dilworth Woolley helping to spearhead the new or or- He was a member of the first executive committee and the first vice president of the central region This year he was elected president of the state organization and took his post last October One of the first jobs for Dilworth Dilworth Dil Dil- worth Woolley however and for Utah Pro-Utah was to draft and recommend recommend recommend rec rec- rec- rec a bill to create an Industrial Industrial In In- Promotion Commission This brought state government directly into the picture The 2 organizations in connection with several other state agencies and county organizations are doing a commendable job of selling industrial industrial industrial in in- Utah The vision of Dilworth Woolley Woolley Wool Wool- ley is becoming reality But it doesn't stop there Dilworth now sees Utah as a distribution center center cen cen- ter not just for the west but for all of the Pacific He sees a huge air freight center he sees a Utah customs house and on and on As the rest of Utah catches the same vision indeed Utah may become all that Dilworth Dilworth Dilworth Dil Dil- worth Woolley visualizes |
