Show Ten Trophies Added To Collection By PRINCIPAL WINSTON GLEAVE CLEAVE At the end of a school year it itis itis itis is interesting to look back over the past nine months and summarize summarize summarize sum sum- marize what the fine young group of students from Ephraim Manti and Sterling have The students who represented represented represented Manti ManU High School in the various activities on a local regional regional regional re re- re- re gional and state basis have done donean an outstanding job It is the purpose of this article to review for the people of our communities some of the successes successes successes suc suc- of the 68 1967 school year The year began under some remodeling projects that have turned out to be very fine additions additions additions addi addi- to our school A new library li library library li- li office and biology department department department depart depart- ment were added to the main building The school year got underway underway underway un un- un- un derway with many students carpenters carpenters carpenters car car- penters and teachers working side by In the schools school's first I regional activity the band under the di direction direction direction di- di of Ned Jensen went to Richfield for the Region VII marching festival where the band was judged the best band from the 15 Region VII schools The band brought home the first trophy of the year from the festival Next the land-judging land team under the direction of Mr Earl Wheeler won the division land judging honors and brought back the second trophy of the year Members of the school felt very good at this point with two fine trophies for the new trophy case over in the new gym Basketball season then rolled around and Manti ManU found themselves themselves themselves them them- selves playing for first and sec see second second ond and places at the Region VII Round I Robin tournament in Richfield From there two more fine trophies were added to the new trophy case the second- second place basketball trophy and the coveted sought-after sought sportsmanship sportsman sportsman- ship trophy representing the best sports of 15 schools The TIle Templar Templar Temp Temp- lar team under the leadership of Coach Wilbur Braithwaite went on to the state Class B basketball tournament in Provo and finished sixth in the Class B state meet To take sixth out of 53 member schools in Class B BIs Bis Bis is a very good record for 68 1967 school year The mighty sophomore basket- basket ContInued on page three TROPHIES Continued from page one ball squad went to the Gunnison Valley Sophomore Tournament under the coaching of Glen Goodwin These boys brought home the first place trophy which brought the total number of trophies to five In April the Drill Team was invited to the Piute High School Drill Team Showing Showing Showing Show Show- ing under the g guidance of Mrs Norma Goodwin The girls put on a very impressive performance perform perform- ance and walked away with a sec second nd place trophy which gave its sixth trophy for the year Next the music department participated in the division small and large group music festival The instructors for the festival l were Mr Ned Jensen and Mr J. J Evan Bean Together they brought home the trophy In the large group music festival festival festival festi festi- val held at Gunnison Mr Bean and his chorus won top honors With this first place trophy the number swelled to eight for the new trophy case In the meantime Mr Braithwaite Braithwaite Braithwaite Braith- Braith waite had his tennis team working working working work work- ing out and preparing for the Region and State Tennis Meets At Region VII the tennis team won first place and was awarded the first place hardware again which brought total in the 68 1967 trophy department to nine Wow What a year Nine trophies and still the state Class B finals to go in tennis with the possibility of getting ten trophies trophies troph troph- ies in one year This seemed more than could be hoped for but the boys did not let the school down In Salt Lake they won number ten the second place Class B tennis trophy The annual awards assembly was held Monday May 20 in the high school auditorium where many awards certificates trophies trophies trophies troph troph- ies and scholarships were presented presented presented pre pre- to many outstanding groups and individuals The two hour program proved how many high-caliber high students students' really really really real real- ly has |
