R ANDERSON REACHES MILESTONE Jonathon Swift said Every Everyman man desires to live long but no noman noman noman man would be old President Lewis Robert Anderson Ander Ander- son observed his birthday on Tuesday March 26 at his home with his young wife of 94 years and his family Although considered old in years Mr Anderson Anderson Anderson An An- derson is young in attitude and spirit and always progressive in learning He was born at Fountain Green on March 26 1872 His parents were Lewis and MaryAnn MaryAnn Mary MaryAnn Ann Crowther Anderson When he was about eight years old he was asked to take head of sheep to Moroni to the tithing office The road was narrow narrow narrow nar nar- row with high sage brush on each side He walked the eight miles both ways bare foot and was proud to think he was given such responsibility While very young his father was called caned on two missions forthe forthe for forthe the Church His mother s the family by selling milk and butter She took in sewing and boarders Mr Anderson Ander Ander- son remembers well the hard hardtimes hardtimes hardtimes times and the song Hard HardTimes HardTimes HardTimes Times Come Again No More is often sung at the Anderson family parties He said his most unusual experience experience experience was his meeting Clara Maria Munk and after a five- five year courtship they were married married married mar mar- ried in the Manti Temple December 11 1895 Mrs Anderson Ander Ander- son said that at that time big rounded pounds of butter were delivered In the year 1967 they celebrated their wedding wedding wedding wed wed- ding anniversary As long as he was able he loved to fish and hunt One qualification qualification qualification he desired in sons-in- sons law was that they should enjoy the same hobbies And it so happens happens happens hap hap- pens they do He I has as as always appreciated and enjoyed good music In his younger years he played the mandolin piano organ harmonica harmon harmon- ica and cornet He had a private library and until his eyesight failed was an avid reader of good books When he worked for a large Boston wool concern as a buyer he was paid a monthly salary and expenses The expenses did not have to be itemized The TIle owner said If you cant can't trust the men with your money we dont don't want them Mr Anderson was told that his account was used as a guide If the expense accounts were near his they were all right He is very generous and un un- selfish His daughter recalls one summer when he let his children and their friends take the car for Continued on page four L ll R. E Rich Mr Anderson was responsible responsible responsible sible for all business of the missIon mission mission mis mis- sion which included 10 states and elders Here he witnessed witness witness- ed bitter hatred and was attacked attack attack- ed by mobs Here he also witnessed witnessed witnessed wit wit- great faith and inspiration inspiration inspiration tion which he has never forgot forgot- ten His more than 15 years as the president of the Manti ManU Temple with his wife as matron was one of his choice experiences which both of them cherish They were happy to have Elder Elder Elder El El- der John Longden assistant to the Council of the Twelve and Pres Vernon L. L Kunz call on them Sunday and sing Happy Birthday Mr Andersons Anderson's eyes are very blue His patient understanding of people his kindness and courtesy courtesy courtesy cour cour- tesy his interesting mind and spontaneous humor his making the most of his time his example example exam exam- pIe of high standards and ideals have had a far reaching influence influence influence ence on his acquaintances and loved ones And his wife has the same characteristics They are the parents of six she living children Mrs Clark Lucile Keller R. R Clair Mrs Waldo Eunice Garbe L. L Glen Elliott M M. all of Manti and Mrs J. J Earl Mary of Red Red- mond There are 14 living grandchildren grandchildren grandchildren grand grand- children and 49 living great great- grandchildren There is also one living sister Mrs Elmer Mable Mable Mable Ma- Ma ble Simmons |
