Show News of Manti Men In Uniform Visiting in Manti ManU Douglas Bessey arrived in Manti early Monday morning surprising his mother Ethel Ahlstrom Unknown to her Bob Bessey had gone to meet h his i s brother in Salt Lake City and bring him home Doug will report back to Fort Lewis Washington after 20 days He and Carl Warwood arrived back at Fort Lewis after serving on a special maneuver in Alaska At their farthest north point they experienced temperatures down downto I to 58 degrees below zero and Doug says all the men were mighty glad to get back to warmer warmer warmer war war- mer weather Visits Tokyo In Tn the last letter to his folks Mr and Mrs 1 L L. L Glen Anderson George Anderson tells of a visit to Tokyo George has been stationed stationed stationed sta sta- sta- sta on Hokkaido northern island in the Japan group and flew Clew to Tokyo to spend a ten- ten day clay furlough George registered at ata a downtown downtown downtown down down- town hotel and then went on into town to see a movie There he ran onto Lester Mellor who had come to Tokyo while on a short furlough from Korea The following morning George met Carl Bown all three of them being registered at the s same sam a m e hotel George promised to write more of his Tokyo furlough when he returns to Hokkaido Sons Going Coming Mr and Mrs Pat McCaffery have one of their sons returning returning returning return return- ing home from overseas on April 1 while another is bound for foran foran foran an assignment in Germany Airman First Class Dean McCaffery McCaffery Mc Mc- Caffery has sent word that he will be leaving Tripoli North Africa on April 1 and will re return return return re- re turn to the U. U S. S with his base located at Houston 1 Texas lIe He went overseas a year and a half ago He doesn't know when he will be home on furlough but expects to be out of the theAir theAir theAir Air Force in late summer Gail McCaffery went into the army last September and up until two weeks ago was stationed at Fort Ord Califor Califor- nia He was sent to New Jersey Jersey Jersey Jer Jer- sey for reassignment and sailed last week for a new post somewhere somewhere somewhere some some- where in Germany Visits Buddy In his last letter to his folks Jack lack told of going to io the hospital to visit with Dean Dean Buchanan lIe He reports that Dean is coming along fine from the frostbite he suffered in Alaska Both are arc at Fort Lewis On Furlough George W. W Shell is home on furlough and visiting in Manti with his wife the former Anna Annn AnnaMae AnnaMae Mae Boyington and in Payson with his folks He has completed completed completed com com- basic training at Fort Ord California and is to Fort Bliss Texas Writes rites from Korea Our thanks to Carl H. finished reading the Messenger and thought maybe Id I'd write you a n few lines that might prove to be of interest Keith Chapman and I a are r e every very lucky We Ve both came overseas overseas ready to rotate home and I said goodby to him I was surprised to see him about a week later It seems he was extended 5 more months Being a 1 reservist he was to leave after alter 19 months of active duty but butin butin in Korea he had to stay until he had 40 days clays left in the army In other words the same as a regular draftee It was quite a disappointment but something good did come comeI I of it Keith had his choice of going back to his old company or any other company lie asked to come into the same outfit Im I'm in and it was granted So now we are both in the regimen regimental platoon uses jeeps to make recons of major roads and supply supply supply sup sup- ply routes We Ve also make plenty plen plenty plen- plen ty of recons on foot We Ve have men in our platoon who speak a 3 total of 21 different languages and dialects Most of the men in our platoon are masters at map reading drafting and have good memories Being able to find ones one's way and take care of ones one's self in the outdoors is isa isa isn a n must I can say that hunting and fishing in the mountains back home has helped me a lot We Ve also have to know a lot about explosives and demoli demoli- Physical fitness is also i. i a 1 requirement All these things 4 go toward the completion of our job which is to gather and collect collect collect col col- col- col lect about the en en- en emy In combat the outfit spends spends' r most of its it's time lime to 1000 yards in front of of everyone els elsIn else In case of a out bug we are the last to leave blowing up bridges etc as we go In combat combat com com- bat hat the outfit i is not too healthy to be in n Here re rein in Korea our job has been a few jeep patrols but plenty of foot patrols Right now we are arc situated 20 miles mules north of parallel in inthe inthe the valley vaHey We Ve are the farthest American division north and the only American division in the X corps area on the eastern eastern eastern east east- ern front At this time we are in reserve about 20 mi from the buffer zone one way and only 5 mi another way There are South Korean troops on line in front of us and all around us As long as th the shooting is stopped stopped stopped stop stop- ped we are sitting silling pretty There are plenty of mountains up here f We Ve are very close close to to heartbreak heartbreak heart break ridge Christmas Hill Hilland hilland and md sandbag castle You dont don't have to look at these hills long longto to see how rough the fighting was here at one time I guess a lot of people back home breathed a sigh of relief when the shooting stopped I Ikno kno know v we over here did But for forus forus forus us who are arc stuck over here yet yel it il wont won't be over until were we're home 1 It would be well if we could all get to- to gether It wont won't be long until well we'll all aU be home I only have 89 days clays left in the Army and Keith is only 30 days behind me The rest o of
