Show Where Much Is Given There is an old saying that Where much is given N muc much h a also I. I so is expected d Li Th This is saying could well be reversed to state that where t f s much is expected much also must be given We think this latter statement could well apply to our ourt V t school teachers Of what group does the public expect so soi i f much as from the teachers We not only leave to them al almost aln al- al n most the entire burden of instructing our children scholasticallY scholastically scholastically scholas- scholas but we also leave to them much of the disciplining and the moral training of our young folks training that is fundamentally a responsibility of the home and of parent parent- hood Too lazy too busy or morally unfit ourselves to give such training to our children we pass the task along to the school teachers We also expect the teachers to take leading parts in activities not connected with the schools in drives of various kinds in i celebrations church work and all sorts of other community activities While expecting and usually receiving this extra service service service ser ser- vice from the teachers we let out a terrific howl about the salaries being paid to the pedagogues Let us not forget that where much is expected much also shall shaIl be given Considerable public antagonism has been shown to recent pay increases granted the teachers It would appear however that teacher pay has been too low in past years or there would not now be such a shortage of teachers neither would so many have left the teaching profession to go into r other lines of work yes almost any other line of work L' L where pay has been higher and qualification standards lower 1 We do not believe that many parents and taxpayers begrudge the teachers a fair standard of pay but we are convinced convinced convinced con con- vinced that much of the local antagonism which has been shown was due not to the increase in salaries obtained but butto butto butto to some methods used in obtaining the increases The teachers teach teach- ers as a group failed fully to take the public into their confidence confidence confidence con con- and therefore the public developed a suspicion anc and antagonism toward teachers as a group not as individuals We believe that a very great majority of the people want to see the teachers well paid and happy that they have great respect for the teachers realize the great responsibilities they bear and look upon teaching as the highest of callings We do not believe that teachers should be sensitive over-sensitive to letting their employers the public know the amount of oi salary they receive As the people who pay the bill the public is entitled to know and should know the amount of pay each employee receives Yet right now some teachers or teacher groups are trying to get the legislature to pass a bill which would keep such information from the public Certainly Certain Certain- ly this action will not contribute to greater mutual respect and confidence between teachers and the public We Ve heard one of the leading teachers of the district give a very outstanding address recently in which he said that people today act too much in the mass and not enough as individuals We hope the teachers above all people will vill maintain their individuality will not have their efficiency lowered by yielding machine-like machine to group movements seeking only group benefits We hope the teachers will take the public into their confidence in matters of pay hours etc Now that teachers are receiving pay that compares fa favorably favorably favorably fa- fa with other groups we hope more and more young people will be attracted to take up the teaching profession that the teachers as individuals and as a group will vill remember that where much is given much also is expected We hope also that the public will never forget that where where much is expected much also must be given |
