Show One Hundred Sixty Years So those who oppose President Truman's plans are y years ars behind At least that is what the President told a group of Democratic women on Sept 27 One hundred sixty years That would take us back to about 1889 wouldn't it That was a time when a man was deemed something more than an animal or a machine to be cared for and controlled controlled controlled con con- trolled by others That was a time when a great motto was born In God We Trust because the addresses and writings of the statesmen of the time show clearly they recognized a greater Power that governs the universe That was a time when the leaders of our nation were just lust fresh from a victory over an executive despot who would impose his will upon them I It t was a time when those same leaders were laying the foundations of a strong government they hoped would endure They were careful to make a division of powers powers among among three branches of government and were especially careful to place curbs upon the executive branch lest it should become despotic It was a time they provided for orderly delays before any radical change in governmental could be made They feared immediate enactment of whims of the moment and knew such yielding to public pressure could lead only to confusion and chaos That was a time when a man was deemed to have some individual r responsibility in caring for himself and his own yes he was considered more than an animal or or a machine he was looked upon as a free born son of God and was taught that liberty and personal responsibility are inseparable It was a time when men were being told there are no gains without pains or no progress and no security without effort It was a time when the belief was pretty prevalent that he who does not work shall not eat the bread of the laborer physically handicapped and the aged except excepted d. d It was a time when men took pride in accomplishment and the clamoring for something for nothing was unheard of or was deemed as bad as any other type of theft It was way back then when most men believed in the divine dictum that man shall not live by bread alone and when few believed that all ills could be solved by a government government government gov gov- checkbook Yes that was a time when men and leaders were anchored anchored anchored an an- pretty solidly to tested and proved fundamental principles principles principles prin prin- of honesty and responsibility It was known that the general welfare could not be promoted without first insuring individual welfare and the latter most emphatically included individual responsibility No man has greater social security than he who is able to think and plan and care for himself and help support the less fortunate and also support proper and necessary governmental functions It might be well for Pres Truman and some of his fair deal advisers to go back one hundred sixty years and acquaint themselves with the fundamental principles that have made America great and then to determine to adhere more clos closely ly to tho those e principles in order that America may r remain main great |
