Show w Not Like Ike lIte We heard it on the radio but thought we must have mis mis- understood Yes surely we had misunderstood A statement like that did not fit in with the Dwight D D. Eisenhower who had shown such tenderness and respect for his mother Nor could it have come from the gentlemanly gentlemanly gentlemanly gentle gentle- manly lips of the to soon-to-be president of Columbia University Yes there was no doubt of it we had misunderstood the newscaster on the radio Why there was no justification at all for such a statement and certainly not from a refined gentleman gentlemanlike like Ike Yes we ve had misunderstood That's all there was to it But when our Sunday morning paper came there it was vas right on the front page Im not going to tell any stuffy good-by good to the troops Ill I'll just tell them By God youve you've done a great job Eisenhower was was' quoted as having said when he turned the command of the army over to General Omar N N. Bradley on Saturday Why did he put it that way vay Could it be a reversion to the status of a would-be would hard-boiled hard corporal newly appointed to lead a squad and emphasizing his authority with an an oath Or perhaps he was vas imitating some tough top top kick he had heard It must have been beena blessing his men with left handed prayers a reversion of some kind Surely a man of Ikes calibre needs no profanity to emphasize his remarks How much finer it would have sounded how much more becoming a great general and college president it would have been and how v much better example it would have se set for the I youth of America had he said I By By the grace of God youve you've done a g great eat job That would have been more like the Eisenhower we read about during the dark days of the war That would have been more like a president of a great uni university Yes and it would have been more like another great general general general gen gen- eral who once said farewell to his troops and became the first p president of this republic That other general used the name of many times in his address but not once in the way Ike used it Sat Saturday Perhaps that's one reason we will celebrate his birthday on Feb 22 Perhaps that's one reason his memory will endure and be revered long after the sounding bold-sounding profanity of others is forgotten General Eisenhower has rendered a great service to a gre great t nation and to the world and for such he is deserving of our respect our gratitude and our admiration Success has placed him himon on a high pedestal In such a position he owes to the rest of usI us I the responsibility of a good example Leadership in peace is no less important than leadership in war And there is no n nobler bler leadership in peace or in war var than leading men to do right to speak right and to think right The divine directive Thou not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain still stands Yes how much better it would have been and how much tr truer er leadership it would Have shown if General Eisenhower had said By the grace of God men youve you've done a great job o |
