Show One Man Crowd By DeWitt Vitt Emery Editors Editor's N Note te DeWitt Emery is president of the National Small Business Mens Men's Association Many foreign visitors writ writers rs an and d political observers have 1 come to this country toured from coast to coast taken long andr and detailed notes of the way vay we live liv r and vor work together r only to togo togo go home and despair of ever being able to describe a typical American This is not surprising because there just aint no such such I animal As Americans we ve simply defy classification as a race or as gr group up types with neat little labels But even am among ng ourselves we are constantly trying to do the same ame things to sort ourselves into separate bins like vegetables in ina ina a grocery store We tag our bins or groups of people with labels like workers consumers business men farmers stockholders stockholders stockholders stock holders and so on While it is true that all of these terms have useful meanings the habit of constantly classifying people into one group or another is unrealistic and can lead to all sorts of nonsense and con con- fusion The reason is obvious Nobody ever fits completely into anyone any one me classification For instance every worker is is also a consumer So are the people in all the other groups Many workers and farmers farmers farmers far far- mers are also stockholders All of us share common rights privileges privileges privileges leges and responsibilities as citizens and most of us as adults have common cause as voters Now v when we consider how many of these various groups each one of us actually belongs to it is easy to see how impossible unnatural and frequently just plain senseless it is to go around labeling people as belonging in this group or that group without observing how v many other groups they also belong in And when you see or hear someone who constantly harps on this versus class-versus- class theme Such a person is either awfully naive grossly misinformed or is grinding an axe This phony labelling of people and then selling them as asU U workers on the idea that they are their employers or appealing to them as liberals to oppose a variety of other folk who are conveniently labeled reactionaries the whole process Protes' is a favorite trick of the Commies Its It's the old divide-and-conquer divide technique and it fools too many many people too much of the time Next Nett to our role as citizens the biggest common denominator I we we share in this country is that of being workers It doesn't make much difference whether we work in overalls or a white collar T The e point is that most of us have a job where we sell our energy and talents to create something of value either as goods or as a service For this we get an immediate return of money But what we really get is a claim on the total supply of goods and ser- ser rice that all of create The us together money just serves as n n. handy way of dividing up the results But at this point watch vatch out for a slick spot in the thread of logic Money is confusing stuff and the talking fast-talking boys use it as a pawn in this game of setting group against group especially if they can make you forget yo you are a member of many groups For instance they say to you as a worker Demand more money for less work then of f the theand t h e o 11 I you'll get a bigger share 0 a 0 and will have more time to enjoy them It sounds good but t fi l i y e erl erlI r slid slides es right past the fact fat t that unless you somehow also a I so P I on more goods the H.
