Show Prison Graduates Sixty from High School On May 29 sixty Inmates at atthe atthe atthe the Utah State Prison will step forward to accept high school diplomas In addition forty- forty three Inmates will receive eighth grade certificates and 40 Vocational-Technical Vocational certificates certificates will be awarded at atthe atthe atthe the annual ceremonies According to Howard Evans principal of basic education and high school programs at the prison the high school program program program pro pro- gram has grown from one graduate graduate grad grad- graduate In 1956 to the present six six- ty This years year's crop of graduates graduates graduates grad grad- also includes five women who represent one third of ot all women Inmates at the prison This graduation says Evans represents quite an achievement for many of the inmates In the first place many had only reached the eighth or ninth grade on the outside And second many had experienced only failure In the traditional school setting The high school program along with the basic adult education education education edu edu- cation program are administered administer administer- ed through the Jordan School District T The h e Vocational Vocational Technical Technical education program Is handled by the Utah Technical College at Provo During the ceremony the forty vocational certificates will be awarded by the College in seven different career areas welding baking electricity m machine a chi n e up set-up diesel mechanics and auto me- me Welding and baking ap appear appear ap- ap pear to be the most popular choices with nine certificates to be awarded In each of these areas The theme chosen by the In Inmates Inmates inmates In- In mates for the graduation Is This time like all others Is Isa isa isa a good one If we but know what to do with It H.
